Sylt shines: New graffiti artwork shows youth perspectives!
A new passage between the Wilhelminen fountain and the health food store on Sylt was recently enhanced with an impressive piece of graffiti art. This project shows young people's perspectives about their home island and was realized by David Kory and Curties from the association “the Urbanists”. The artwork was originally scheduled to be completed in October 2024, but completion was delayed due to bad weather and the illness of the eleventh grade art teacher moin.de reported.
The new work of art, which was installed between the crepes stand and the health food store, reflects the ideas and perspectives of the young people from the school center on Sylt. The motifs include classic Sylt representations such as the beach and seagulls, as well as critical elements including an octopus representing repression, a Porsche and a punk with a mohawk hairstyle. Artist Curtis emphasizes that the work of art not only shows the beauty of the island, but also critically addresses grievances such as sell-outs and capitalism.
Work of art as an expression of youth culture
Tessa Heyde from Sylt Marketing Gesellschaft (SMG) highlights the visual enhancement of the facade and emphasizes that the work of art has a lasting character. In the past the area was used as a toilet by 9 euro guests, highlighting the need for redevelopment. The total costs of the project are in the mid four-digit range and were financed by the SMG and the “Living Democracy” funding program.
On Friday, David Kory finished the artwork without the students who were originally scheduled to participate. He was supported by his friend Curtis from Hamburg. With their work, the two artists not only bring color but also a deeper message into the passageway, creating a space for discussion about the challenges and changes that shape the island.
The mural therefore represents a connection between the artistic expression of youth and the current social issues that affect Sylt. The combination of creative depictions and critical comments makes the work of art a significant addition to the island.
