Vera Mercer: Experience neo-baroque photographic art in the residential palace!
The Ludwigsburg Castle Festival is presenting a very special expansion of its program in the 2025 season: the exhibition by Vera Mercer, whose photographs will be on display in the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace from June 1st to July 18th, 2025. The exhibition is realized in cooperation with Galerie Schlichtenmaier and opens on concert days one hour before the start of the respective concert.
Vera Mercer, born in Berlin in 1936, began her career with dance training before turning to photography. She became known for her unique photographs, especially in the 1950s when she worked in Paris. Her style is characterized by neo-baroque still lifes, often working with flowers and food, inspired by her passion for gastronomy and cuisine. Her works reflect the transience of life, such as blossoming, withering and decay.
Characteristic motifs and artistic influences
In her photographs, Mercer shows impressive still lifes with mountains of cow heads, feet and pig sides, reminiscent of the Dutch masters of painting of the 17th and 18th centuries. Her ability to portray everyday objects in a new light has earned her international recognition in the art community. In addition to still lifes, she also photographed portraits and conducted photo reports on influential artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Samuel Beckett and Andy Warhol.
After her time in Paris, where she married the eat artist Daniel Spoerri in 1958, Mercer finally lived in New York. There she continued her creative work and created murals for restaurants and hotels. She was also active in the catering industry itself and published the book “The Boiler Room: The Restaurant and Its People” with Distance Publishing, in which she shares her experiences and experiences.
