Economic recovery: La Palma connects with Munich in winter!

Breña Baja presents a new attraction: an artistically designed bus stop has been built on the LP-203, near the international airport of La Palma. This creative initiative is not only eye-catching, but also symbolizes the island's efforts to increase the attractiveness of its public transport. The airport itself has been the sixth international airport in the Canary Islands since 1987 and forms a central hub for travelers.

In the 2025/26 winter flight schedule, the connection between La Palma and Munich will be strengthened by Discover Airlines. This will enable a direct flight connection every Sunday from October 26, 2025 to March 22, 2026, bringing a total of 4,150 additional seats. Cabildo President Sergio Rodríguez emphasizes the importance of this connection for the economic recovery and sustainable development of the region.

Economic situation and labor market

The island's current economic indicators show positive developments. In June 2025, La Palma recorded its lowest level in ten years with 5,811 unemployed people. This represents a 3.3% decrease in unemployment compared to the previous month and 13.4% lower year-on-year. With 3,399 unemployed women and 2,412 men, women make up 58% of the unemployed. In addition, 63% of job seekers are 45 years or older.

In order to improve the water supply, the La Palma Water Management Council is providing 600,000 euros for private water projects. Applications can be submitted until September 2nd. These funds are intended for the construction or repair of water pipes, pools, wells and wastewater treatment.

Local events and environmental protection

While La Palma begins its economic recovery, the population also has to pay attention to the environmental conditions. An alert level has been declared since July 3rd due to the acute risk of forest fires. Residents are asked to avoid open fires and reduce physical exertion during midday hours.

Cultural life on the island is also active. Villa de Mazo celebrated Semana Chica, which featured traditional dances and music. The highlights of the celebrations took place on July 2nd and 3rd, while the Proclama de las Danzas took place on July 5th with live music by the Banda del Aula de Música Municipal.

Traffic demands and mobility

The island's transport infrastructure is well developed. Driving on La Palma is uncomplicated, even if the roads are winding. The speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside. A seatbelt requirement and a ban on using cell phones while driving must be observed. Illegal parking is punishable by fines of up to 100 euros, although a discount of around 50% is possible with immediate transfer.

The bus network (guaguas) is updated regularly, although arrival times must be estimated. There are also several ferry connections available for travelers, including the Fred Olsen Express fast ferry, which connects St. Cruz de La Palma with Los Christianos (South Tenerife) within two hours.

The connection from La Palma to the most important European cities remains secured by airlines such as Iberia and Binter Canarias. Iberia offers flights from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Munich to La Palma via Madrid several times a week and also allows luggage check-through from the departure airport.
