Travel back in time with historic trams: A weekend in Darmstadt!
The Tram Museum in Darmstadt, known for its impressive collection of historic trams, will open its doors to the first exhibition visitors on May 29, 2025. As part of the so-called World Rail Days, those interested can experience the development of tram technology up close from May 29th to June 1st, 2025.
During opening hours from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., visitors have the opportunity to view original vehicles from seven decades, ranging from pre-war cars to trains from the 1980s. Many of the vehicles have been restored and are reminiscent of bygone times. Some of them may be known to older Darmstadt residents from their own memories. The location of the exhibition is Marburger Straße 16, Darmstadt, and can be easily reached by both tram line 4 (Messplatz stop) and line 8 (Nordbahnhof).
Special features of the exhibition
The Darmstadt Tram Museum, also known as a tram depot for historic vehicles, moved its operations to the new address in May 2024. The museum is part of the Industrial Heritage Route in the Rhine-Main area and offers a multifaceted exhibition that shows numerous vehicles that have been used in Darmstadt over the years. The oldest exhibit is an electric tram STR 2 from 1913, which has a special place in the exhibition.
Historic trams also run regularly on the Darmstadt rail network, making the connection to modern tram use tangible for younger generations. On site, visitors can also take advantage of small refreshment options that invite them to relax.
Additional arrival information
A historic train bus runs every hour between the exhibition and the railway museum at Kranichstein train station, making the journey comfortable. These events do not take place regularly, as the exhibition is open a maximum of four times a year due to building regulations. The upcoming exhibition promises an experience for young and old that offers a deep insight into the history of public transport in Darmstadt.
