Unexplained disappearance: What truth is the cruise hiding?

Eight years ago, a German woman disappeared while on a cruise on the Mediterranean. The family, consisting of a married couple and their two small sons aged four and six, boarded the cruise ship “MSC Magnifica” in the Italian port of Civitavecchia. That trip in February 2017 included several stops, including in the Italian port of Genoa, where the woman was last seen. Her disappearance was noticed when the ship docked again in Civitavecchia after stops in Malta and Greece. The crew noticed that the woman was no longer on board, but only upon return, which raised many questions. [Derwesten] reports that the crew stated that the woman had not been seen for several days.

The husband, a 52-year-old IT expert from Eberswalde, was arrested at Rome airport. During the arrest, he claimed that his wife had disembarked during a stop in Greece, something she had also done on previous trips. In 2022, he was sentenced to 26 years in prison in the first instance because of speculation about murder, suicide or a third-party crime. Nevertheless, the investigation revealed no evidence of a crime. A suitcase found in the Mediterranean containing a woman's body turned out not to be that of the missing woman. [Nordkurier] describes that the woman was last seen during a stopover in Genoa, and her disappearance therefore remains mysterious.

Unclear circumstances and legal disputes

In the appeal process that has now taken place, a court in Rome overturned the verdict against the husband and acquitted him of the murder charge. The defense argued that the first verdict was made without any logical justification. The husband now lives in Ireland and protests his innocence. There was no incriminating evidence against him during his 14 months in custody and the prosecution failed to prevail when it sought confirmation of the verdict.

The exact circumstances of the 38-year-old woman's disappearance remain unclear. Media reported possible marital problems and that the woman was “tired” of the children, which further confounded investigators. To this day there is no trace of the missing woman and a body has never been found. The cruise ship's crew faced a barrage of questions, but surveillance cameras failed to provide any relevant footage.

The case caused a stir not only in Germany but internationally and raises many questions about the security and investigation of missing person cases. Despite all the speculation, the family is left in an uncertain situation as the search for the truth about the woman's fate continues.
