10 activities in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka
We explore the best activities in Trincomale, Sri Lanka's historic port city, which begins to bloom again
Trincomale, or Trinco, as it is generally called, in the northeast of Sri Lanka is a perfect place to spend a few days on the beach. We ended our odyssey in Sri Lanka in the nearby Uppuveli on a powdery route from Trinco Blu.
How we will bypass most tourists Trincomalee for the neighboring beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli - and who can blame them? The coast here is golden and lined with palm trees with a gentle ambience that is a perfect place to relax before you drive home.
The city of Trincomale itself has a fascinating story and a handful of striking sights that are worth a morning tour. The ancient city suffered from the civil war, but begins to recover thanks to its deep -water port and the developing tourism scene.
We spent a morning to explore the sights and have summarized the best activities in Trincomalee below. Organize your own tour on the sea or country path with Trinco Blu by Cinnamon.
1. Koneswaram temple

If you only visit a sight in Trincomale, make it a colorful Konswaram temple. Surrounded by the dramatic Swami Rock and the Bay of Gokarna, the classic-medieval complex Trinco's greatest attraction. The place is an important Hindu pilgrimage center and one of the Pancha Ishwarams (five shiva residences), which were built in Sri Lanka in honor of one of the main gods of Hinduism.
2. Fort Friedrich

As with many fastenings in Sri Lanka (Galle Fort, for example), Fort Frederick was built by the Portuguese, rebuilt by the Dutch and then confiscated by the British. Today the fortress is occupied by the Srilank Military, but visitors can explore several of their walls.
3. Wal observation

Sri Lanka has developed into one of the most important whale observation goals in the world. While Mirissa is the most popular place to watch whales on the south coast, we do not recommend it. The alternative option of Trinco has excellent excursions that are not yet touted loudly with the specific goal of "not becoming in Mirissa", we are told. Whales can be observed from viewpoints in Koneswaram or on boat trips. The season lasts from May to October.
4. Fish market
The noisy daily fish market near the bus station gives a great insight into the lives of many who work in the flowering fish industry in the city. Seller offer a variety of fish, including tuna, barracuda and squid, all of which are caught in the waters off the city's coast. The early hours of the morning are the most busy.
5. Manayaweli Bay
end your visit to the fish market with a quiet walk on the gently curved beach of Manayaweli Bay. Most fishermen from the city go ashore here before they go to the market to sell their catch. In the nearby Dhoby tank, native women wash their laundry masses.
6. British soldier cemetery

After Singapore fell to the Japanese in the Second World War, Trincomalee became the most important naval and air force base for the British and the Allied powers in South Asia. The cemetery contains the graves of 364 soldiers of the British Empire, who were killed or died during the Second World War. The nationalities include Sri Lanka, India, Canada, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Italy, East Africa, South Africa, Myanmar and Pakistan
7. Marienkathedral
The St. Mary’s Cathedral is a Catholic church built in 1852 and by far the most attractive in the city's churches. In the front a sky blue neo -baroque facade and a tiled, tower -like back, it is worth a short stop.
8. Hot sources of Kanniya
Alt = “Activities in Trincomale-Sri-Lanka-Kanniya-Hot-Springs”> Atlas & Boots
The seven geothermal sources in Kanniya are a popular destination for Sri Lanker, locals and international tourists alike. You will probably also see Srilankic school parties who visit the wells and play in them. If you want to swim, separate changing rooms for women and men are available. However, if you swim, be warned: you will attract a lot of attention! Note that the use of soap is prohibited.
9. Beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli

The charming coastal communities Uppuveli and Nilaveli offer beautiful beaches. We stayed in Uppuveli, which is further developed, but the water is calmer and well suited for swimming. Nilaveli has a longer beach (almost 4 km) with fewer hotels and guest houses, but the water is more restless.
10. Pigeon Island National Park
alt = "Activities in Trincomale-Sri-Lanka pigeon island"> Atlas & Boots
Pigeon Island with powder -white sand, volcanic rocks and lush thicket certainly looks like an idyllic lonely island in every respect. However, the recent increase in tourism means that they will have difficulty finding a calm spot, and the once untouched reef is clearly understood in decline. In order to counteract this, many areas have now been cordoned off. The island is located off the coast of Nilaveli with tours that take about two hours. You can be organized via your hotel.
activities in Trincomale: The essentials
What: Discover the best activities in Trincomale, Sri Lanka.
Where: We stayed in Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, probably our favorite hotel in Sri Lanka. The hotel directly on the beach of Uppuveli has a beautiful, bright, cool and quiet atmosphere. The rooms all look at the sea, which ensures a wonderful sunrise in the morning and a cool breeze all day. The airy rooms, kept in bright white and ocean blue, harmonized perfectly with sea and beach.
We spent our last days in Sri Lanka to stroll along the beach, between swimming in the sea and meals in the restaurants on site. It was the perfect conclusion of our travel month in Sri Lanka.

When: If you would like to dive in Trinco or watch whales, the best time for a visit to May to October is the quietest and offers a good view.
The weather in Sri Lanka Overall is a bit complicated because there are two separate monsoon times that affect different parts of the country. Jan-APR and Mitte Jul-Sep offer the best odds for good weather nationwide.
like: Trincomale lies on the northeastern coast, which means that the distances to other parts of the country are relatively large. Despite the longer travel times, the city is quite well connected to roads and rails.
There are night trains to Colombo (8 hours), but other goals such as Anuradhapura or Kandy require a change in Mahawa (also known as maho). Check the train timetables here.
The driving prices according to Colombo are as follows:
- class: 760 LKR (5 USD) 2nd class: 450 LKR (3 USD) 3rd class: 285 LKR (2 USD)
There are several bus connections from Colombo and other important goals, but the train is a much more pleasant experience. We found the bus driving in Sri Lanka quite stressful, so they may prefer to take a transfer instead. Your hotel can arrange this, but it is always worth negotiating a discount, since these are normally excessive (e.g. if 15,000 LKR are specified, ask for 11,000).
Many tourists choose to rent a driver for the entire trip. This costs about $ 45 a day (including the days on which you do not use the driver). We used Ajaa (+94 777 284 178) and Sisi (+94 777 203 083) for shorter transfers and found them friendly and reliable.
The travel times to the most important goals are as follows:
Colombo: 6 hours (airport: 5.5 hours) Dambulla: 2 hours of Anuradhapura: 2 hours Kandy: 4 hours of bile: 7 hours
Most international flights end up at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Book via Skyscanner at the best prices.
We flew with Sri Lanka Airlines and since we had a long trip to the airport and then a long flight to Myanmar, we used the serendib lounge in the departure gate and came to a few drinks and a snack.
