Just a short 20-minute drive from Hobart is the picturesque coastal town of Snug. Although best known to visitors as a quick stop before the Bruny Island Ferry, Snug has its own waterfall trail that leads to a pristine waterfall known as Snug Falls.

In this guide I will outline everything you need to know about getting to Snug Falls Tasmania, as well as provide a report and photos of my experience on the hike.

Where is Snug Falls?

Snug Falls is located on the Snug River in a natural eucalyptus forest, just 5.9 kilometers from the town of Snug. This is approximately 24 kilometers south of Hobart, Tasmania. The waterfall is at the base of a short hiking trail that leads from a dirt road to the river.

How do I get here?

To get to Snug Falls, it is best to have your own car or transportation. This is because there are no tours of this attraction from Hobart. My advice is to enter the Google Maps pin above (accurately) which will take you to the Snug Falls Road trailhead, which is from Snug Tiers Road.

This 5 kilometer stretch of road is not paved but is fairly well maintained. We managed it in our large RV with no issues, so any type of vehicle should be fine. However, this road winds and climbs a narrow ridge, leaving little room for two vehicles to pass. Therefore, it is best to take it slowly.

If you don't have your own car and really want to visit the waterfall, you can take a bus from Hobart to Snug. There is no public transportation from Snug, so you'll have to walk the additional 3.4 miles or try your luck hitchhiking to the falls. When we were there on a clear weekend morning, there were at least five other cars parked at the trailhead.

The Snug Falls Walk

Hiking distance: 2.9 kilometers round trip (round trip)
Duration: 40 minutes – 1 hour
Height: 145 meters in total, all on the way back up
Difficulty: Easy

The Snug Falls Walk is a fairly easy waterfall hike that is suitable for families and pets. The trailhead begins just off Snug Falls Road, directly across from the shared parking area for your car. The hike follows a well-maintained path over 1.5 kilometers down to the river. The sign at the starting point says 2 kilometers back, but that is inaccurate. The path to the waterfall is mostly downhill, so be prepared to return the same way.

The Snug Falls Track

Starting from the signposted starting point, the trail begins almost immediately with the gentle descent to the waterfall clearing. On the way you will pass huge fallen trees that you will have to duck under. There are also some small but beautiful sandstone caves along the route that are worth visiting.

About halfway up the waterfall climb you will see a small shelter. This is known as “The Pub With No Beer”.

From the refuge, the descent becomes slightly steeper before opening into a beautiful amphitheater with rocky waterfalls.

Snug Falls Tasmania

Snug Falls is a beautiful 25 meter high waterfall that cascades down a sheer rock wall made of sediment. The source, the Snug River, has several tributaries that allow the waterfall to have adequate flow year-round.

However, when I visited, the waterfall was more of a gentle trickling sound. Still, it was a great opportunity to take some photos and relax.

The pool below the waterfall is fairly shallow and there is a large tree trunk with one end impaled and the other resting on the waterfall wall. The pool is pretty shallow, so not really big enough for swimming.
