Snug Falls Tasmania - a fantastic waterfall walk near Hobart
Snug Falls Tasmania - a fantastic waterfall walk near Hobart
Snug Falls is a popular local waterfall near the Snug suburb, Tasmania. Read this detailed guide for hiking on the short snug Falls Walk on an untouched eucalyptus path, just a short drive from Hobart.
Only a short 20-minute drive from Hobart is the picturesque coastal city of Snug. Although Snug is known to visitors as a short stop in front of the Bruny Island Ferry, it has its own waterfall path that leads to an untouched waterfall that is known as Snug Fall.
In this guide, I will sketch everything you need to know to get to Snug Falls Tasmania, and provide a report and photos of my experience on the hike.
If you are looking for further waterfalls in the area, you should definitely look at my Hobart waterfall leader. I also wrote a detailed accommodation leader to help you find where you can spend the night!
where is snug if
Snug Falls is located on the Snug River in a natural eucalyptus forest, just 5.9 kilometers from the city of Snug. This is about 24 kilometers south of Hobart, Tasmania. The waterfall is at the foot of a short hiking trail that leads from an unpaved road to the river.

How do I get here
To get to Snug Fall, it is best to have your own car or means of transport. This is because there are no tours of this attraction from HOBART. My advice is to enter the above Google Maps-PIN (exactly), which leads you to the starting point of the Snug Falls Road, which comes from Snug Tiers Road.
This 5 kilometer section of street is not paved, but quite well maintained. We did it in our large motorhome without any problems, so every vehicle type should be fine. However, this street winds and climbs up a narrow line that offers little space for two vehicles passing by. Therefore it is best to take it slow.
If you do not have your own car and absolutely want to visit the waterfall, you can take a bus from Hobart to Snug. From Snug there is no public transport, so you have to walk the additional 5.4 kilometers or try your luck to hitchhike to the waterfalls. When we were there on a clear weekend morning, at least five other cars parked at the starting point of the hiking trail.

The Snug Falls Walk
Hiking route: back and forth (back and forth)
Duration: 40 minutes-1 hour
Height as a whole, everything on the way back up
difficulty: Simple
The Snug Falls Walk is a fairly simple waterfall hike that is suitable for families and pets. The starting point begins directly on Snug Falls Road, directly opposite the released parking lot for your car. The hike follows a well -developed path over 1.5 kilometers down to the river. The signpost at the starting point says 2 kilometers back, but that's imprecise. The way to the waterfall leads mostly downhill, so prepare yourself for the way back on the same path.

The Snug Falls Track
Based on the signposted starting point, the path begins almost immediately with the gentle descent to waterfield. On the way they pass huge fallen trees under which they have to duck. There are also some small but beautiful sandstone caves along the route that are worth a visit.

You can see a small shelter about halfway up the waterfall climb. This is known as "The Pub with no beer".

From the shelter, the descent becomes slightly steeper before it opens up to a beautiful amphitheater with rocky waterfalls.
Snug Falls Tasmania
Snug Falls is a beautiful, 25 meter high waterfall that falls down a steep rock wall from sediments. The source, the Snug River, has several tributaries that enable the waterfall to have an appropriate flow all year round.
However, the waterfall was more of a gentle rippling during my visit. Nevertheless, it was a great opportunity to take a few photos and relax.
The pool below the waterfall is quite flat and there is a large tree trunk, one end whose end and the other rests on the waterfall wall. The pool is pretty flat, so not really big enough to swim.
