Where is Stoney Creek Falls Cairns?
Stoney Creek is accessible via a short 20 minute drive from Cairns CBD via the Western Arterial Road. You need to turn onto Stoney Creek Road (Kamerunga) which goes through the rainforest to the car park.
From here, the trail is clearly visible on the right and immediately leads onto a concrete footbridge where you can turn off to the nearby swimming hole or continue on the Stoney Creek trail to Old Weir Falls.
Did you know that the Stoney Creek parking lot is the trailhead for the Glacier Rock Viewing Trail and is just a 15-minute drive from Fairy Falls and Crystal Cascades?

Stoney Creek waterfall and swimming hole
Everyone knows Cairns can get hot! So it's not hard to see why Stoney Creek has become such a local favorite.
Stoney Creek swimming hole
The great thing about Stoney Creek Falls Cairns is that there is a deep swimming hole just minutes from the car park.
To get here, cross the concrete footbridge and immediately take the left path at the fork. Alternatively, you can cross under the bridge and follow the shallow stream for about 3 minutes to the waterhole.

The swimming hole is wide and about 2 meters deep at its deepest point.
Although this is a great place to swim and cool off, it can get very crowded in the summer, especially on weekends. Consider visiting early or on weekdays to avoid the crowds.

The Stoney Creek hiking trail to Old Weir Falls
If the swimming hole is crowded or you prefer a short hike to a larger, more remote waterfall, take the trail to Old Weir Falls. This can be reached by taking the straight path from the fork in the footbridge, which leads up a wide, unpaved path.

This trail is the Stoney Creek Walking Track, which reaches Old Weir Falls in about 20 minutes. This trail follows the stream up the side of a rounded hill and ends just above the waterfall.
There is a large fallen tree that rests directly above the waterfall, framing it beautifully. The Old Weir waterfall itself cascades approximately 8 meters down a rock face onto a sand-fringed shore.

Although the water here is not that deep, it is still a great place to cool off and enjoy the tranquility. There is also a deeper swimming hole just above Old Weir and a few other spots scattered along the route.

Gilligan’s Backpackers – The best backpacker option for a great atmosphere in Cairns is Gilligan’s Backpackers. That's because this one has a swimming pool, air conditioning, a full kitchen and a great common area to meet other travelers.
