Van Journal Week 4: Freycinet Peninsula & Maria Island

Van Journal Week 4: Freycinet Peninsula & Maria Island
There are no shortcuts...
It seems the world is obsessed with shortcuts. It's everywhere we look in 2021 - shortcuts to success, fame, vaccines and everything else. But when all we see is the finish line, we quickly forget why we were in the race in the first place.
After living a nomadic lifestyle for so long, we've slowly learned to wean ourselves off the habit of short-lived success. We've learned to refine our goals while trying to focus on the bigger picture.
This week that ideology took physical form.
Our goal for Tasmania is to build the most comprehensive resource of outdoor attractions and activities on the island. And more importantly, doing it well and in a way that inspires people to adventure. So with this goal in mind, we strapped on our boots and walked over 90 kilometers and climbed over 3,600 meters in five days.
The Freycinet Peninsula Circuit
The Freycinet Peninsula is easily one of the most picturesque places in Tasmania. Known primarily for its impressive granite peaks and pristine white sandy beaches, it was a place we wanted to fully explore and document.
By far the best way to see the Freycinet Peninsula is to walk the Freycinet Peninsula Circular Trail. There are a few variations of this route, but we designed our own. We walked in a figure eight loop, including a peak of Mount Freycinet and Mount Graham.
The route wasn't necessarily difficult, but it was quite long in just two days. Nonetheless, it was a great warm-up for some of the most difficult hikes we have planned for the rest of our time in Tasmania.
I've included some of my favorite photos from the hike below. If you'd like to see more, I've also just published my walking guide to the Freycinet Peninsula Circuit, which includes around 70 more.

Maria Island circuit
After returning to our van fairly late on Wednesday afternoon, we said goodbye to Freycinet and headed to Triabunna, where we booked a ferry to Maria Island the next day.
The weather had been great for us the last few days and that trend continued as we explored Maria Island.
Maria Island is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the world and is also a great hiking destination. To experience what this incredible place has to offer, we once again decided to explore it on foot on the Maria Island Circuit.
Here are some snapshots from our time on the island.
