Did you know that there are wild reindeer in Iceland? The Arctic Island, which was famous for its cinematic landscapes and the fiery night sky, does not get enough recognition for their wildlife.
Those who are looking for unique wild animals may be lucky enough to find polar trucks, seals, whales and thousands of Icelandic horses. I was also surprised when I found out that polar bears rarely visit the island because they come from the neighboring Greenland on floating icebergs.
Are wild reindeer in Iceland at home?
For those who visit Iceland in winter, it is difficult to believe that life could be born there. The hard volcanic ice elements are rather irreconcilable. However, after they were introduced from Norway in the 1770s, wild reindeer populations have managed to make Iceland their homeland.
Although reindeer was introduced throughout Iceland, the only animals that could survive were the populations in the East Fjords. Wild reindeer in Iceland are not at home, but definitely look like it when they stroll through the snow -covered mountains.
Where can I find wild reindeer in Iceland?
For those who drive the ring road, the East fjords will most likely be on their travel route. Since Route 1 winds up the coast, they look for reindeer herds. These guys like to stay near rivers, insulation and hills.
While wild reindeer are quite rare, it is certainly an astonishing moment when you do it. Reindeer tend to merging in herds and are easy to scare. While we were in the East Fjords, we saw six different herds, and most of the time they ran away when we approached ourselves quietly from afar.

The best city to see wild reindeer in Iceland
Seydisfjordur (Seyðisfjörður) is a small municipality in eastern Iceland, which is located on the southern tip of the fjord of the same name. Although there is not much to do in this city, it is worth a visit to experience the real Easternisland local life. It is also one of the best places in Iceland to see wild reindeer. You can find the place on the map below.
The street that leads to the fjord is perfect to observe wild reindeer. There are small rugged mountains and picturesque snow hills. Of the six herds of wild reindeer in Iceland, we were lucky enough to discover two on this street.
