Earthquake on Lake Garda: Residents report explosion at night!
In the early morning hours of May 21, 2025 at 12:37 a.m., the region around Lake Garda in Italy was shaken by a magnitude 3.0 earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake was about two kilometers from Trembileno and at a depth of twelve kilometers, like Mercury reported.
The tremors were also felt in popular holiday resorts such as Riva del Garda. Residents reported long tremors and vibrations lasting a short period of 1.01 seconds. These prolonged tremors led to numerous reports being received by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
Aftershocks and regional conditions
After the mainshock, seismologists recorded three weaker aftershocks with magnitudes between 0.6 and 1.0. It is known that small earthquakes are not uncommon in the Lake Garda region, however earthquakes with a magnitude above 2.0 are less common. There are approximately two million people living within 60 kilometers of the epicenter who could potentially be affected by such events.
According to EMSC information, the local earthquake was with a low shaking level and no significant damage was expected. This is consistent with residents' responses, who reported more of a brief shaking. In addition, the EMSC said that earthquakes in this region can sometimes be triggered by natural phenomena such as landslides or anthropogenic activities such as drilling.
Earthquake phenomena and precautionary measures
Although the earthquake was felt near Lake Garda, no major damage was reported and there was no evidence of a tsunami risk, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed. However, it is important that residents are aware of the possibility of aftershocks, as they often occur in the same regions where more significant earthquakes occur.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in the region, and awareness of seismic activity remains crucial. Facilities like the EMSC play an important role in monitoring and informing the population about such events.
