Violent storms in Italy: chaos caused by floods and landslides!
A critical weather situation has developed in Italy, which is putting severe strain on several regions of the country. Thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail led to alarming scenarios in Lombardy, Tuscany, Liguria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and beyond. These weather events have been classified as particularly dangerous by the Italian weather services, with an orange alert for the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio and parts of Lombardy. The yellow alert applies to Piedmont, Liguria and Veneto ADAC reported.
The province of Como in Lombardy is particularly affected. Here in Blevio, 19 people were brought to safety from the impending danger of masses of water. Lake Como overflowed its banks, resulting in numerous fire brigade operations due to fallen trees, floods and landslides. The “Lariana” state road had to be closed due to a landslide near Como. In addition, the Milan-Zurich railway line was temporarily interrupted because intercity trains were unable to reach Como San Giovanni, but the route is now open again.
Evacuations and emergencies
Numerous emergency calls due to floods, landslides and fallen trees were recorded in the affected regions. The situation was particularly dramatic in the province of Lecco, where a train came to a stop just a few meters from a cesspool caused by rain. Houses also had to be evacuated in the municipalities of Torno and Blevio, and some motorists were trapped in their vehicles and required rescue, reports Bluewin.
In Tuscany, rain and wind led to almost a hundred fire brigade operations in the provinces of Massa Carrara and Livorno. Landslides also caused traffic disruptions on the island of Elba, leaving around 200 people temporarily cut off. In La Spezia, Liguria, 40 missions had to be carried out to secure dangerous trees and support in flooded underpasses.
