Ryanair strike hits Spain: 22 days of chaos for holidaymakers!
From August 15, 2025, unions are calling for a large-scale series of strikes among Ryanair ground staff. This affects all of the company's locations in Spain, including important airports such as Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga as well as major holiday islands such as Ibiza, Tenerife South and Lanzarote. A total of 22 strike days have been announced until December 31, 2025, which could have a significant impact on flight operations. Private trips to or from Spain under these circumstances should be well planned to avoid possible inconveniences such as Mercury reported.
The first work stoppages will take place on August 15th, 16th and 17th, followed by other key strike dates such as August 23rd and 24th and the entire months of September, October, November and December. The comprehensive list includes, but is not limited to, the following days:
| Month | Strike days |
|---|---|
| August | 15th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th, 31st |
| September | 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th |
| October | 11th, 12th |
| November | 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th |
| December | 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th, 31st |
Background of the strike
The causes of the strike action lie in the disputes between the unions and the Ryanair ground handling service provider Azul Handling. The unions (UGT, CGT) particularly address the criticism of mandatory additional hours and fixed-term contracts in their demands. The CCOO union, however, has accepted a collective agreement and is not taking part in the strikes. This could influence the dynamics within the industrial dispute, such as Travel reporter notes.
The Spanish Ministry of Transport plans to order minimum services to maintain basic operations at the airport during the strikes. However, Ryanair itself does not expect any significant disruption to flight operations as a result of strikes by external ground staff. However, travelers are encouraged to check the current flight status and, if necessary, consider alternative travel options.
Rights of travelers
Passengers affected by the strikes should be aware of their rights. In the event of delays of three hours or more or flight cancellations, you are entitled to alternative transport or free cancellation for a waiting time of five hours or more. In addition, travelers are entitled to food and accommodation if waiting times are long, but there is usually no compensation in the event of strikes by ground staff.
In summary, the summer of 2025 in Spain will be under the shadow of the announced strikes. Travelers should inform ahead of time and possibly adjust their travel plans to minimize inconvenience.
