Swiss travel 2025: Early bookers focus on comfort and planning!

The travel habits of the Swiss are reflected in the new report from the Swiss Bankers Travel Study 2025. With around 1,600 participants, the study provides exciting insights into the booking patterns and preferences of travelers in 2025. It becomes clear that early planning and careful selection of travel destinations are highly valued by the Swiss. Comfort and safety are central factors that are at the forefront when planning your trip.

The majority of travelers in Switzerland plan their trips 4 to 6 months in advance. This shows that early booking is not only popular but also the preferred method. Of those surveyed, 61% say they choose hotels as their preferred accommodation, while apartments, hostels and campsites are also in demand. For 74.5% of travelers, the location of the accommodation is the most important criterion taken into account when booking.

Booking behavior and technologies

What is particularly noteworthy is that 43.3% of Swiss travelers book their trips online using their smartphone. This mobile usage has increased in recent years, which is also reflected in a 12% increase in payments via mobile wallets. However, younger travelers aged 18 to 24 show little interest in artificial intelligence (AI) when planning their trips, with only 18.1% using social media for their planning.

In terms of payment methods, 43.9% of respondents prefer credit cards for their bookings. In addition, 65.7% say that free cancellations are (very) important to them. An interesting analysis of the study shows that 36.1% of those surveyed have set a travel budget between 2,000 and 4,000 francs, with 45.7% preferring trips lasting 8 to 14 days.

Sustainability and travel trends

The topic of sustainability plays a particularly important role for the older generation. 34.3% of travelers between the ages of 65 and 99 are actively concerned with sustainability. This could indicate that awareness of environmentally friendly travel is greater among this age group than among younger people. At the same time, the figures also show that 37.4% of all cancellations are due to illness and 19.8% are due to plan changes.

Nevertheless, the joy of traveling remains unbroken. Although only 14.3% of respondents spontaneously book a month in advance and only 5.7% plan short-term within a week, the majority show that well-thought-out and planned trips are preferred. This also includes deciding whether to adapt accommodation or transport depending on the situation, which 42.9% of respondents do.

Overall, the Swiss Bankers Travel Study 2025 shows that Swiss travelers book their trips well informed and with planning support. Innovative booking methods and a growing awareness of sustainability are shaping the future of travel in Switzerland.
