In Vietnam, preparations for the 33rd SEA Games are in full swing. The national table tennis championship will take place on May 25, 2025, which plays an important role in the selection of athletes for the upcoming international competitions. Nearly 200 players from 21 provinces and cities will compete in Da Nang to showcase their achievements. The focus is particularly on national player Nguyen Anh Tu, who is taking part in the championship and is already considered a talented athlete. The Vietnamese Table Tennis Association has an ambitious goal: at least 1-2 gold medals at the upcoming SEA Games.
The Vietnamese table tennis team has won a gold medal in each of the last four SEA Games (29th, 30th, 31st, 32nd). Challenges in training and financing
Funding is a major barrier to improving performance. The annual budget for international competitions is only enough for a team of around 10 athletes. Therefore, corporate support is crucial. Some players like Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh are already sponsored by VietED, and the company also plans to provide similar support to Nguyen Anh Tu. Unfortunately, there is a lack of corporate commitment to Vietnamese table tennis athletes overall.
The national table tennis team will be formed after the 2025 championship, consisting of 3 coaches and 10 athletes, 5 men and 5 women. The team is expected to train in China for 1-2 months to best prepare for the SEA Games. The Vietnamese sports administration has ambitious plans for 2025. The aim is to be among the top three nations at the SEA Games 33, with the express aim of achieving second place.
To achieve this goal, 17 focus sports were selected, including table tennis, swimming, shooting and many other Olympic and Asian sports. Director of the Sports Authority, Đặng Hà Việt, said that despite the challenges, the entire industry is determined to successfully complete the tasks ahead.
In preparation for the 33rd SEA Games, which will be held in Thailand from December 9th to 20th, coordination between the Ministry and the Table Tennis Association is crucial. Both institutions are working together to find solutions to improve training and competition conditions to give Vietnamese athletes the best chance of success.
