Mountain railway upper foot: tourism boom and exciting events in Innsbruck!

The Innsbruck tourism region recorded a pleasant increase in the overnight stays in the 2025 winter season. With 1.71 million overnight stays, an increase of 6 percent was achieved compared to the pre-corona period. Among other things, this positive development can be attributed to the new mountain railway in Oberperfuss, which attracts numerous guests and is part of a growing offer of winter activities. Among the countries of origin of visitors are Germany, Austria and Switzerland at the top.

The international interest is particularly noteworthy: the region recorded an increase of 19 percent among Americans, 17 percent among Chinese and 29 percent among Polish guests. Australia also shows lively interest with an impressive increase of 46 percent, which corresponds to 24,000 overnight stays. These figures show that Innsbruck is not only a goal for locals, but also gains increasingly popularity internationally.

versatile events and activities

Winter in Innsbruck not only offers ski opportunities, but also a variety of events and activities for non-skiers, including hiking, tobogganing and cross-country skiing. The guests' length of stay rose to an average of 2.4 nights, which means an increase of 2 percent. Events such as the Trailrun Festival with 7,000 participants and the Mass Interalpin, which attracted 36,800 visitors, contribute to the revival of tourism.

In particular, the month of December represents a climax in the tourist calendar due to the numerous advent markets. In addition, the “Peter Anich III” combination railway at Rangger Köpfl first reached 100,000 ski days and thus underlines the attractiveness of the region for winter athletes. Two thirds of the guests are locals, which shows the connection of the population with the region.

family -friendly excursion destinations

A highlight for families in the region is the Innsbruck Alpenzoo. The zoo, which can be ideally visited in the run -up to Christmas, lies on the sunny side of the Inn Valley and picturesquely extends up the mountain slope up to the Hungerburg. The journey takes place comfortably with the Hungerburgbahn, and a combination card for the train and the entry to the zoo is available, which also includes parking in the underground car park in Innsbruck.

The system of the Alpinezoo is designed to be natural and offers exciting animal observations. Although winter is not the ideal time for zoo visits-since some animals hibernate-visitors were able to gain unique insights into the life of animals such as lynx, chamois and brown bear. Feeding goats and sheep is a highlight, especially for children. In addition, the zoo offers an impressive view of the Inntal and Innsbruck, which makes the visit a special experience.

In addition, there is the bistro Animahl and a zoolades on site that round off the visit. Another attractive offer in the area is the Christkindlmarkt on Hungerburg, which is manageable, but has a great view of Innsbruck. After a day full of experiences, the visitors often draw back into the Inn Valley, where there are numerous sights.

Overall, the Innsbruck region offers a varied program in the winter season, both for skiers and families. The combination of nature, events and cultural highlights creates a unique vacation experience.
