Rebdorf sixth graders discover England: Adventure in Hastings!
Sixth graders from Rebdorf Boys' Secondary School recently went on an exciting trip to England. On the trip, which began on Sunday, the young travelers had to endure a long bus ride and a ferry crossing across the English Channel. In sunny weather and temperatures around 20 degrees, the students arrived in Hastings, where they were accommodated in a youth hotel. This is a valuable experience as part of your school education.
On Monday the students visited the heritage center in Rye, a picturesque former fishing town that is now three kilometers from the sea. This interesting geographical change is due to silting, although the tides are still clearly visible. Visiting the Heritage Center gave students the opportunity to learn more about local history and culture.
Insight into the Pestalozzi School's trip to England
At the same time, the Pestalozzi School organizes a trip to England every two years, which is aimed at students in grades 8 and 9. This journey also takes you by bus via Calais and Dover to Hastings. During the trip, the students are accommodated in groups with host families, which promotes cultural exchange.
The program in Hastings includes a city tour, a visit to the Smugglers' Caves and Hastings Castle. A highlight of the trip is taking part in a traditional English tea ceremony, which gives students an authentic insight into British customs.
Things to do in London and surrounding areas
The Pestalozzi School is also planning two day trips to London, where a city tour, a theater workshop at the London Globe and a cruise on the Thames will be offered. A visit to Greenwich Park is also on the program. Tube tickets and a map of London are included in the tour price, allowing students to explore the city independently.
In addition, participants can book additional offers through the school, such as entry to the London Eye or Madame Tussaud’s. Day trips to Brighton and Eastbourne are also part of the program, which includes team competitions such as a town quiz and beach walks. Excursions to Battle, Rye, Canterbury and the Ashford Shopping Outlet have also been organized in the past.
Participants in this voluntary, extra-curricular school event should have an above-average interest in England and its people. You are encouraged to act as an “ambassador” for Germany and to communicate in English as much as possible throughout the trip. Registration for the trips takes place in October and will be communicated to the relevant classes. Such experiences contribute significantly to students' development and their understanding of other cultures.
Overall, both the experiences of the Rebdorf students and the Pestalozzi School's extensive program show how enriching such trips can be for personal and academic development. This proves that the exchange and learning of foreign cultures plays a central role in school education.
