Tourism under pressure: Politics must act for the future of the industry!

On Monday, an important tourism summit took place in Berlin, in which the focus was on central topics in the industry. Anja Karliczek, the new chairman of the tourism committee in the Bundestag, spoke of the need to pay more political attention to the tourism sector. In Germany, millions of people are employed in tourism, and Karliczek asked to make this important industry visible. She also emphasized that it was time to take opportunities in international markets such as in Asia and Africa to increase competitiveness.

During the summit, the challenges of gastronomy were also addressed, where economic livelihoods and jobs are threatened. The airport infrastructure in particular suffers from high cost and competitive pressure, which is classified as a serious problem for the tourism sector. The emigration of airlines due to the high costs in Germany could also have negative effects on the travel industry.

outlook for the travel year 2025

Christoph Debus, from March 1, 2025 CEO of the DERTOUR Group, expressed optimistic about the development in the travel year 2025. In his new role, he will, together with an experienced management team, lead the tourist activities of the REWE Group. Debus has extensive experience that he gained in leading positions at Flix SE and Condor Airline Group. He will report directly to the CEO of REWE Group, Lionel Souque, and strengthen the areas of international and Central Europe.

At the same time, DRV President Norbert Fiebig expressed that the federal government urgently need to improve the economic framework for the travel industry. Especially against the background of planned reforms of the EU flat-rate directive, which could bring additional requirements that make package tours more expensive, proactive support from the sector is essential. Fiebig also emphasized how important strengthening air traffic as a backbone of the industry in order to avoid the negative effects on vacation and business trips.

The future of the travel industry could therefore be significantly influenced by the political decisions and the new management structures in companies such as the DERTOUR Group. The coming months will show whether the required political measures are actually taken and how they will affect the economic development of tourism.
