The grut at Stanley, Tasmania - everything you need to know

A complete travel guide to visit The Nut in Stanley, Tasmania. Discover one of the most famous natural attractions of Tasmania in this remote part of the northwest coast.

Stanley is a historic city at the foot of "The Nut", the remains of an old volcanic mate. This strange geological phenomenon with the right name attracts many visitors to the otherwise quiet, rural city.

In this blog post, I would like to tell you everything you need to know if you want to try the grut at Stanley. I will inform you about the short but steep hiking trail and the chair lift and share some photos of my trip.

where is it and how do I get there?

getting to the nut is pretty easy. However, if you plan to come here independently, you need your own vehicle.

You have to go to Stanley, about 223 kilometers from Launceston or 125 kilometers from Devonport. The directions here are pretty simple and as soon as you have arrived in Stanley, there is no question where The Nut is. Stanley is literally built on the base of the plug, while The Nut itself is considered a state reserve (The Nut State Reserve).

If you want to climb The Nut or take the comfortable path with the chairlift, drive to the end of the "Browns Road". A simple marking is "Nut Rock Cafe". Here you will find a large parking lot with a comfortable access to the hiking trail and to the chairlift.

What is the nut?

As I briefly mentioned, The Nut is the rest of a volcanic peak. Although I am by no means a geologist, I will do my best to explain it. Basically, a vulcan plug is the remaining hardened magma from the inside of an old volcano. This rock is harder than the old land surface material and therefore remains, while the sediment material erodes over time. The picture below is a good explanation.

There are several volcanic plugs all over the world and most have a similar protruding form. A famous example is the Devils Tower in Wyoming, USA.

Even if you are not too interested in how The Nut at Stanley was created, it is undoubtedly a cool attraction that is definitely worth visiting a road trip through Tasmania.

The groove chairlift

When you visit Stanley, you must make your way to the top of The Nut to enjoy a fantastic view, and now to say that you have made it!

For those who do not like to take the steep steps, jump on the The Nut Chairlift, which is located in the parking lot, which is mentioned in the direction above. Unfortunately, this lift was closed during my visit (the chairlift is closed in winter), but it seems to be a pretty unique experience for those who are visiting in the warmer months.

The distance to the chairlift is about 250 meters and a return trip costs $ 17 per adult. Check the updated prices on the official website.

Walking up the groove in Stanley, Tasmania

Hiking route: 2.9 kilometers circular path
Duration: 45 minutes-1 hour
Height | The groove height: 152 meters of Amsl
Means (well-maintained, but somewhat steep)

The way up is known as The Nut Access Track, which is cement -sealed and quite steep. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go up to have a breathtaking view over Stanley. However, if you have already made it all the way up, you can go the "summit circuit", a 2 kilometer loop around the circumference and down to the parking lot.

along the way there are several great viewpoints with informative signs about the unique bird world The Bass Strait and the indigenous history of The Nut, Stanley and Tasmania.

Below are some photos that I took from the summit loop. Also pay attention to wild animals! There are several Wallabys and other native prayers who call this place their home.

What about the penguins in Stanley?

The Nut is not the only outstanding attraction in Stanley, Tasmania. Nature lovers may also be lucky enough to see some penguins.

To watch penguins, I recommend going to the "Godfrey’s Beach Penguin Viewing Platform", literally right next to The Nut at the northern end. If you pay a visit at the morning or dusk, you may be able to discover one or two blue penguins. This species is the only penguin type that occurs on Tasmania and accidentally the smallest penguin type in the world.
