40 years of unforgettable moments: The photographer who honors workers

Do Anh Tuan, a 76-year-old photographer, has developed a unique perspective on the lives of workers in Vietnam over his 40-year career. Born in Hung Yen and raised in the industrial Thai Nguyen region, known for its tea and steel, Tuan has captured authentic moments through his photographs without succumbing to luxury trends. His impressive works often depict workers in production, including scenes such as a worker in front of a steel furnace or tea pickers in the scenic mountains.

Before pursuing photography, Tuan worked as a car mechanic and was secretary of the youth union. These experiences shaped his view of the working world as he discovered his new hobby in his free time and began sending his photos to the press. One of his great passions is the tea fields, which he regularly visits in areas such as Tan Cuong and Phu Luong. His deep connection to these places and the people who work there is clearly noticeable in his photos.

Artistic development and commitment

Tuan had no formal training as a photographer, but taught himself everything through self-study. His photographic style, which requires minimal post-processing, aims to capture the decisive moment. This originality earns him great praise, not only from critics but also from the community of workers he honors. As a member of the Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel Workers Club, he regularly organizes photo exhibitions to provide a platform for the daily struggles of the workers.

On May 11, 2025, he presented his first solo exhibition entitled “Going Through Time”. This exhibition included over 50 carefully selected photographs that provide an impressive overview of his work. Tuan sees photography as a dialogue between the photographer and the viewer. He encourages younger photographers to maintain their passion and patience in the craft.

The Rewards of Photography

For Tuan, the greatest rewards of his work lie in the spiritual values and joy he experiences through photography. He remains active in the world of photography, even at the age of 76, and is passionate about promoting the art form. As head of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Photography Association, he plays a central role in the exchange between experienced and aspiring photographers.

His life's work not only offers a glimpse of the beauty of the work, but also leaves a message for future generations: the essential importance of passion and patience in the art of photography. He hopes future artists will apply his values and continue to capture the history of workers.
