Emotional farewell party: English teachers promote talent in Meo Vac!

Efforts to teach English to students in Meo Vac have reached a significant milestone. In a final conference that took place on May 12, 2023, the project for online English lessons for primary school students was presented and acknowledged. Organized by the Mèo Vạc municipal government and the renowned Marie Curie School in Hanoi, representatives from the Ministry of Education, school principals, teachers and students gathered to reflect on the successes and challenges of the program. HagiangTV reports that the first lessons took place under extremely difficult conditions as many students had no prior knowledge of English.

The project has shown impressive student development over the last three years. 100% of 5th grade students in the 2023-2024 school year successfully completed English classes, and over 31.1% performed well. This is a notable improvement, especially considering the district had only one English teacher for 76 third graders during the 2022-2023 school year. Vietnam.vn reports that Vang Thi My, a student, was selected to participate in a district-level competition for her excellent English skills, demonstrating her progress.

Emotional connections and future projects

The emotional connections formed between teachers and students were particularly felt during the graduation ceremony. Vang Thi My cried as she said goodbye to her teacher Bui Huong Ly, who has taught her online for the past three years. The students initially had difficulty forming a personal connection with their teacher until they finally met her in real life. Nguyen Xuan Khang, headmaster of Marie Curie School, emphasizes the positive impact of these emotional connections and is already planning another project to train English teachers in the region with an estimated cost of VND12 billion.

In addition, the establishment of the Marie Curie – Meo Vac Boarding School for ethnic minorities was announced during the conference, which is expected to open in the 2026/2027 school years. The school is intended to help improve the educational landscape in the region and overcome existing challenges, such as the shortage of teachers. The Meo Vac district has a total shortage of almost 3,000 teachers, particularly in subjects such as English.

Sustainable development and community participation

The project also demonstrates the importance of collaboration between schools, government and the community to close the knowledge gap for students in remote areas. Nguyen Xuan Khang and his team of teachers are also involved in the local community, for example through reforestation projects and providing school materials for needy students. This underlines the role of education as a key to social development in rural areas.

The learning outcomes and teachers' commitment have not only improved school qualifications, but also promoted general education in Meo Vac. This shows a positive trend in the region's educational policy, which will be of great importance for future generations of students.
