Flight prices slow down the tourism boom: Phu Quoc in focus in 2025!
A major conference to promote tourism in Vietnam was held on May 23, 2025, organized by Kien Giang Tourism Association. Ms. Le Thanh Thao, chairwoman of the Hanoi Travel Association, said at the event that Phu Quoc is considered a top tourist destination with comprehensive facilities and diverse accommodation options. Despite these positive assessments, it sheds light on the challenges facing travel: the high airfares from Hanoi to Phu Quoc have a negative impact on domestic tourists' willingness to travel.
However, the tourism industry in Phu Quoc has recorded encouraging growth figures. In the first five months of 2025, the number of tourists increased by an impressive 26.9 percent compared to the previous year. According to Ms. Thao, airfares significantly influence travel decisions as air travel is currently the most viable option for travelers. In her remarks, she suggests developing more tourism packages aimed at slow tourism in order to better meet the needs of holidaymakers.
Growth forecasts and visitor numbers
The forecasts for 2025 are promising. The Kien Giang Provincial Department of Tourism, represented by Mr. Bui Quoc Thai, expects over 5.6 million visitors, an increase of 26.9 percent. International tourism is expected to see an increase in visitor numbers to over 780,000, an impressive increase of more than 77 percent. In the first five months of 2025, Phu Quoc already welcomed more than 3.5 million guests, an increase of 30.5 percent, including over 770,000 international visitors, an increase of 78.3 percent.
Additionally, the establishment of the Phu Quoc Tourism Association was announced, chaired by Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy. This new organization aims to improve activities in the tourism sector, strengthen regional connectivity and promote tourism promotion, training and innovation.
Economic impact
The economic impact of tourism is also significant. In the first five months of 2025, Kien Giang generated over VND23 trillion through tourism activities. The continued increase in the number of visitors and the associated income demonstrate the growing importance of tourism for the region.
During the conference, the challenges and opportunities of domestic tourism were addressed and discussed. The initiatives presented by tourism professionals are intended to help further establish Phu Quoc as an attractive holiday destination while addressing existing problems, particularly in the area of airfares.
