On the morning of May 23, 2025, an impressive 55kg tuna landed in Phu Yen. This remarkable arrival was part of a broader initiative to promote tourism in the region, which was presented at a conference in Long An on the evening of the same day. The event was held in Tan An City and was chaired by Mr. Dang Hong Linh, Director of Phu Yen Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The conference was attended by participants from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Long An, as well as representatives from the tourism associations of Phu Yen, Long An and Tay Ninh.

Additionally, nearly 100 delegates from tourism and travel companies were present, taking the opportunity to showcase the beauties and offerings of Phu Yen. A highlight of the conference was the presentation of the tuna: this was filleted to demonstrate the culinary delights of the region, described as “rich in Phu Yen”. Ocean tuna is considered a specialty that embodies the “strong Phu Yen flavor.”

Tourism promotion and future outlook

In order to promote tourism in the Long An region, a conference on the preservation and promotion of historical and cultural relics was previously held. Visitor numbers are expected to increase to more than 2 million in 2024, an impressive increase of 54% compared to original planning. This year, 340,000 visitors have visited historical sites and cultural monuments, while 106,912 students have taken part in excursions.

In Phu Yen, the potential of ocean tuna was also demonstrated at the Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) in Hanoi. In addition to art performances, this event also organized culinary demonstrations, during which a 70 kg tuna was freshly prepared. Visitors were able to see live how the sushi and various dishes with fresh herbs and dips were prepared. These presentations stimulated tourists' interest to learn more about the culinary offerings in Phu Yen.

Cultural heritage and attractions

Phu Yen has not only made a name for itself through its culinary specialties; The region also attracts tourists due to its scenic beauty. The scenic spots include Bai Mon – Mui Dien, Đá Đĩa Reef, Xuân Đài Bay and Đá Bia Mountain. These landmarks are part of the historical and cultural heritage characterized by Vietnamese and Cham cultures and various ethnic minorities. Folklore is brought to life through performances of the lithophonic “Voice of the Stone” and UNESCO-recognized Bai Choi art, among others.

The positive feedback from tourists and rice companies that participated in VITM 2025 strengthens the potential for future tourism relationships. Mr. Dang Hoang Vu from Sao Mai Resort reported promising contacts with international travel agencies looking to include Phu Yen in their future tour packages. These developments promise an exciting future for tourism in the region.

The use of tawny fish as a symbol of Phu Yen's culinary identity could be crucial for the future of tourism in the region as the combination of nature, culture and cuisine attracts more and more visitors.
