Groundbreaking for better education: Ethnic school in Gia Lai receives help
On May 28, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Improving the Quality of Life and Learning” project was held at the Ia Grai District Ethnic Secondary School in Gia Lai Province. The project is part of a humanitarian activity taking place as part of the trip “In the footsteps of the general offensive and uprising in the spring of 1975” and is organized by a team of cadres and artists from Ho Chi Minh City. This was reported by the portal vietnam.vn.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, deputy director of Ho Chi Minh City's Ministry of Culture and Sports, emphasized during the ceremony that the school has served hundreds of ethnic minority students for many years, but has a significant lack of material facilities. The aim of the project is to improve the living and learning conditions of these students while demonstrating the support of the government and the people of Ho Chi Minh City.
Strengthening educational conditions
At the laying of the foundation stone, the chairmen of the Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee handed over souvenirs to the representatives of Ho Chi Minh City. This gesture symbolizes the cooperation between the various regional actors. The journey to the source not only leaves cultural traces, but also a lasting impression through concrete actions such as the current project at the Ia Grai Ethnic Boarding Secondary School.
A central goal of the project is to give students from ethnic minorities more self-confidence in their educational journey. By improving learning opportunities, they should be empowered to actively shape their future, as well as that of their families and their home country. This initiative comes in the context of a broader discussion about ethnic educational inequalities that can be observed in many countries, including Germany.
Challenges of ethnic educational inequalities
In many education systems, such as in Germany, there are ethnic inequalities that begin in preschool education. Studies show that children with a migrant background often have fewer educational opportunities. The educational path of students from ethnic minorities can be influenced by various factors, which is why targeted support, such as the one sought in the project in Vietnam, is of great importance. Research work such as that by Becker and Biedinger (2016) or Diehl et al. (2016), highlight these challenges and discuss solutions to improve equality in educational participation.
The commitment to improving educational conditions for ethnic minorities is not just a local concern in Vietnam, but a global issue that requires international cooperation and support. Such initiatives are crucial to promote equal opportunities in education and strengthen the integration of ethnic groups into society.
