On August 15, 2025, five special excursion destinations away from the tourist hotspots were presented, which are suitable for both adventure seekers and those seeking relaxation. One of the first highlights is the village of Završje, which is home to a 22-meter-high bell tower that slopes an impressive 40 centimeters. This tower was once part of a medieval fortification and offers visitors free views of the beautiful surroundings. Interestingly, Završje also served as a filming location for a Robin Hood film and was awarded best film location at the Berlinale.
Attention hikers and nature lovers
Another recommended destination is the Trail of Seven Waterfalls, a 15-kilometer circular route along the Mirna River. The trail is designed to appeal to both hikers and walkers of all ages. Nevertheless, sturdy shoes and basic fitness should not be missing, as there are various entry points.
Not to be forgotten is the smallest city in the world – Hum. With only around 30 residents, this charming town is known for its traditional stone houses and well-preserved medieval city walls. In the only inn, visitors can enjoy local specialties and the well-known mistletoe schnapps “Biska”. Hum also celebrates an annual schnapps festival, which is a popular event until the end of October.
Another hiking gem is the St. Simon Trail, which impresses with an approximately 10 kilometer long route that starts in Gračišće. A special highlight is the Sopot waterfall, which plunges a majestic 25 meters into a turquoise pool. This hike not only leads past historic churches and chapels, but also offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
For relaxing hours in nature
The Piski Stone Desert, also known as “Istarska Pustinja”, consists of fine-grained sedimentary rock and is located near Šterna, surrounded by a small forest. This area is ideal for hikers, families and anyone looking for peace and relaxation. There is a parking lot directly at St. Michael's Church, which makes access easier.
