About the Starigrad fortress

The Starigrad literally means "old town", but is referred to by locals more as Omiš Fortica and tourists as Omiš Castle.

This is a beautiful fortress that towers 303 meters above sea level and served as a primary viewpoint over the entire Brač channel and the hinterland of Cetina. It was built in the early 15th century and protected the settlement for hundreds of years.

In fact, many historians say that Omiš was not conquered by the Ottomans in his long history in his long history.

You can find more information about the Starigrad fortress in Omiš on the Omisinfo website.

Where is the fortress Starigrad?

The Starigrad fortress is located on a 303-meter-high limestone ridge of the Omiš Dinara chain directly above the village.

Below I recorded the exact location of the fortress. However, keep in mind that these limestone rocks are very steep and you therefore have to follow a certain path to reach the top.

How to go to the Omiš Fortica

In addition to the epic Cetina River Rafting and the famous Omiš Zipline Polygon, a hike to the Starigrad Fortress is a must in Croatia's adventure capital!

There are three main routes to reach the beautiful Starigrad Castle in Omiš. This includes a via ferrata, a steep route, a simple route.

In the following I go into a little more detail on every route.

1. Omiš via Feratta for the fortress Starigrad

If you feel like an adventure, then one of the best ways to achieve the fortress is a guided via ferrata route.

Via Ferrata means translated iron path and is a mixture of hiking and climbing over screwed steel steps. You will be circumcised all the time, which makes this a safe but exciting experience.

You can book the via ferrata tour from Omiš or Split online via Viator (Tripadvisor).

2. The "hard" route

The "hard" route that is elegantly painted on the rock surfaces is a steep route that begins after the large parking lot in Omiš. You can find this by entering "Planovo Omis" in Google Maps.

You have to walk through the tunnel from the parking lot. From here you can see a red sign that shows the starting point of the hiking trail.

The way up is rocky and quite steep (which is why you call it the hard route). However, it is shaded on the most part of the path of pine forests and has several path markings (red circles called Knafelc Waymark) that lead to the top of the ridge.

All in all, you expect about 45 minutes to reach the summit. Since I stayed near the other starting point, I took this path down. However, I think that it would be a better idea to hike up and on the simple path down.

3. The "light" route

The second way of walking up to the fortress is the "light" route that begins a short walk from the city on the "Put Borka" street. This route is largely exposed to the sun, but winds up the back of the ridge on a much gentler slope

This route is less steep, but a little longer (about 1.5 kilometers to the top), but should take between 30 and 45 minutes. This option is also very easy to follow due to the many red path markings.

Arrival in the fortress

When you reach the fortress, enter through the rear doors and climb a number of wooden stairs.

From here you can see a roughly painted sign that shows the entrance price. At first I thought I would get away without payment, but as soon as you enter the fortress, you will see a man who will collect the fee.

Omis Fortica Admission: 20 Kuna per person

There is also an excellent viewpoint next to a rock wall that offers a great sunset site without actually entering the fortress.

Exploration of Omiš Fortica

After you have paid for the entry, you can explore the Starigrad. It mostly shows Gothic characteristics with extensions from the early Renaissance. Apparently, this fort in its history was damaged and repaired several times by storms.

The existing fortress is said to have been built at the original Onastina fortress. This can be seen in the older and larger stone blocks on the lower parts of the structure.

The best viewpoint on the Starigrad fortress is the high tower at the northern end. You can climb this section freely and enjoy the magical view over the mountain Cetina, the Adriatic, the city of Omiš and on clear days even behind Brač and Hvar.
