Attention travelers: New hand luggage rules at Condor and ITA Airways!
In a time-sensitive change, two German airlines, Condor and ITA Airways, have announced adjustments to their hand luggage regulations. This news comes just in time for the upcoming summer holidays, which begin in the first German federal states at the end of June 2025. In order to provide travelers with a seamless experience, the new guidelines are of great importance.
Condor introduced a new luggage structure in April 2025: In the Economy Light tariff, passengers can take one piece of hand luggage measuring a maximum of 55 x 40 x 20 cm and up to 8 kg free of charge on short-haul flights to new city destinations. Outside of these new connections, however, the Economy Zero tariff applies, which only includes a small bag measuring up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm. In addition, larger hand luggage can be booked from 14.99 euros depending on the flight zone, so travelers should plan in advance what they want to take on board. The exceptions for certain destinations, such as the Canary Islands, should also be noted.
Strict rules at ITA Airways
ITA Airways, which as a subsidiary of Lufthansa has now taken over Alitalia's flight operations, has also introduced new weight restrictions for hand luggage. Passengers are now allowed to take a maximum of 8kg for their carry-on baggage and one personal item. The maximum dimensions for hand luggage are 55 x 35 x 25 cm, while personal items cannot be larger than 45 x 36 x 20 cm. This regulation applies to all routes and booking classes. Excess baggage usually has to be checked in, which incurs additional costs for travelers.
The consumer advice center has already lodged complaints with the EU Commission about hand luggage practices, as these new regulations may be disadvantageous for passengers. For travelers planning to fly with ITA Airways, it is essential to find out about applicable baggage restrictions in advance.
Important information for travelers
Travelers should be aware that the new carry-on baggage rules may have a significant impact on their travel arrangements. At Condor, it's not just the free piece of hand luggage that's great news, but also the option to add additional luggage for a fee in certain cases. This regulation applies to numerous new city connections, including popular destinations such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Rome, Palermo, Paris, Prague and Milan. However, the overall weight limit remains at 8kg, meaning travelers need to strategically plan what they need.
It is advisable to find out more about the relevant regulations before departure in order to avoid possible complications at the airport or gate. Having a clear overview of baggage policies can significantly reduce pre-vacation stress.
