Alcohol ban on Lake Garda: Strict rules for tourists from now on!

Italy is taking measures to combat mass tourism and its unpleasant side effects. One of the latest measures was implemented in Limone sul Garda, where a strict ban on alcohol in public spaces was introduced. This ban affects all squares, streets, beaches and parks in the popular tourist region and applies from April 19th to November 1st of each year.

Mayor Franceschino Risatti justifies this step with the burden on public spaces caused by tourists. The problems caused by alcohol consumption, such as noise pollution, abandoned bottles and cans and disturbances to public peace, required urgent action. Additional rules in Italy, particularly regarding road traffic, have been announced ahead of this year's holiday season.

Details about the alcohol ban

The alcohol ban prohibits the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages in public areas. However, there are exceptions: Alcoholic drinks may be purchased in closed containers and transported home or to accommodation. Violations of this ban are punished with fines of between 25 and 500 euros, with the municipal police responsible for checking.

In addition to these measures, other places on Lake Garda are also taking steps to protect nature and local culture from the challenges of mass tourism. Sirmione, like Venice, plans to introduce a daily fee for visitors to regulate the rush to the city. On May 1, 2025, Sirmione witnessed a record influx of tourists, leading to long wait times and security concerns. Head of Security Massimo Padovan has therefore proposed a reservation system for access to the old town on days with high visitor numbers.

A popular holiday destination

Lake Garda is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and attracts over 25 million visitors every year, many of them from Germany. In Italy it is common practice for holiday resorts to set rules of conduct for tourists in order to make everyday life easier for locals. The new measures can help improve the tourist offer and provide holidaymakers with a more pleasant experience.

Like the reports from Mercury and Travel reporter show, great attention is now being paid to improving the quality of life for both residents and travelers. The implementation of these rules could have a decisive impact on the future tourism development of Lake Garda.
