The joy of swimming and wanderlust: Appenzell tourism through the ages

As part of the “Flowers and Books” exhibition, an event to present the anniversary book “Badfreude, Wanderlust und Sistentraum” by Appenzellerland Tourismus AI took place on May 18th in Schwellbrunn. The book, which was published in April, was written by historians Kathrin Moeschlin and Nadia Pettannice. The discussion about the book creation was moderated by Susanna Schoch, the publishing director. Tourism Managing Director Guido Buob also took part in the discussion and highlighted the development of tourism in Appenzellerland.

The book consists of 176 pages, which are supplemented with historical images. It addresses the development of tourism since the founding of the “Appenzell Spa and Tourist Association” 125 years ago, which is considered the predecessor of today's Appenzellerland Tourismus AI association. In his contribution, Buob emphasized how essential knowledge of tourism history is for current development.

The importance of tourism history

The event created a valuable connection between history and current tourism policy in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. Managing director Buob explained the challenges the club has faced over the years, including vandalized benches, the effects of the world wars and the constantly changing communication strategies. The book is intended not only to show the historical development of tourism, but also to address the necessary adjustments to the needs of guests.

The “Swimming Joy, Wanderlust and Slope Dream” book also offers insights into the attempts to establish Appenzell as a winter sports and conference location. These initiatives have often met with varying degrees of success. The exciting story of its development and the challenges the club faced make the narrative particularly captivating and informative.

Public book launch

A public book launch took place on April 10, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. in the Small Council Chamber. The authors presented their findings and invited discussions. Anyone interested can purchase the book, which is available for CHF 38 at the Tourist Info, the Appenzell bookstore and the online shop.

Overall, the book makes an important contribution to documenting the history of the association, which has made a decisive contribution to the development of Appenzellerland over the years. It not only reflects the past, but also offers valuable perspectives for the future of tourism in the region.
