Job market in danger: fewer jobs and rising youth unemployment!

The tense situation on the labor market will remain in May 2025. As the minister emphasizes, the hoped-for recovery in the market depends heavily on the economic recovery. In this regard, industry and the construction sector in particular play a key role. These sectors must be supported with reliable perspectives and incentives so that they remain adaptable in the future.

Current statistics show that a total of 76,088 vacancies were registered with the Federal Employment Agency in May 2025. This represents a decrease of 27 jobs compared to the previous month. Compared to the previous year, there were even 5,636 fewer jobs advertised, which corresponds to a decrease of 6.9 percent. According to the minister, high costs, uncertainties and global trade conflicts are putting additional strain on companies.

Youth unemployment under pressure

A positive aspect is the decline in youth unemployment. There are currently 24,000 young people under the age of 25 unemployed, which represents a decrease of 732 people or minus 3.0 percent compared to April 2025. Nevertheless, youth unemployment has increased by 13.6 percent compared to the previous year, which highlights the challenges in this sector. The current youth unemployment rate is 3.5 percent, while last year it was 3.0 percent.

The minister encourages young people to take advantage of the opportunities offered by training and to actively invest in their professional future. This could be seen as a necessary measure to reduce the increasing number of unemployed young people and stimulate the labor market.

Overall, the labor market remains under pressure, which concerns both employers and employees. The challenges mentioned require a targeted strategy for the long-term stabilization and development of the labor market in the coming months.
