Bayern stars in Ibiza: Eberl defends controversial trip from relegation!

The Ibiza trip of several FC Bayern Munich players is currently causing a stir and criticism. Sports director Max Eberl in particular has been the focus of negative reactions since it became known that stars like Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer took a short trip to the popular holiday destination. This decision was particularly sharply criticized by Sky expert Dietmar Hamann, who emphasized the importance of professionalism and seriousness in the current season. Hamann refers to the upcoming fight against TSG Hoffenheim, which is playing to stay in the league, and notes: “FC Bayern will certainly not want to give anything away.”

The trip, in which, in addition to Müller and Neuer, Harry Kane, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Raphaël Guerreiro, Jonas Urbig, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Josip Stanisic, Dayot Upamecano, Kingsley Coman, Konrad Laimer and Eric Dier took part, became known through private pictures in “Bild”. This publication has reignited the discussion about the role models of professionals, and Hamann wasn't the only one who made negative comments. Former CEO Oliver Kahn also recalled a similar trip three years ago, which had already caused a stir in the past.

Eberl's defense

Max Eberl defended the decision made to approve the trip. In an interview, he made it clear that the team's sporting situation had changed and emphasized: "The constellation is now different, so we have not contradicted the players' plan." He also emphasized that the team only has one game left and that the players are acting as full professionals.

The previous week, the Bayern players had canceled a planned championship trip in order not to disrupt the competition, which made the critics even more unsettled. Lothar Matthäus described this short trip as problematic because it took place despite a previous ban. However, Eberl assured that the Bayern stars would be back in Munich in time to prepare for the crucial game against Hoffenheim.

Criticism from Heidenheim

FC Heidenheim's sports director, Holger Sanwald, also commented on the Ibiza trip and emphasized the pressure his team is under. Heidenheim urgently needs a win to overtake Hoffenheim in the fight to stay in the league, but they have a worse goal difference. Sanwald explained: “FC Bayern will certainly not want to give anything away,” which underlines the explosiveness of the situation in the league.
