On May 17, 2025, the brilliant finale of the Bundesliga season took place, which not only decided the championship, but also the Europa League participants and the relegation. FC Bayern Munich, already established German champions, showed impressive results in their last game and defeated TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 4-0. The goalscorers for Munich were Michael Olise (33rd minute), Joshua Kimmich (53rd), Serge Gnabry (80th) and Harry Kane (86th). This performance took place against a special background as it was Thomas Müller's last game.
While Bayern celebrated their triumph, all eyes were on their pursuers, with Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund fighting for the last two Champions League places. Frankfurt secured third place with a 3-1 win against SC Freiburg, while Dortmund took fourth place with a clear 3-0 win over Holstein Kiel. Serhou Guirassy (3rd minute, penalty), Marcel Sabitzer (47th) and Felix Nmecha (73rd) scored for Dortmund. Kiel, already relegated, suffered an additional setback when Carl Johansson was shown a red card in the 9th minute.
Relegation for Heidenheim
A sad chapter of the season opens for 1. FC Heidenheim, who finished 16th in the table after a 4-1 defeat against Werder Bremen. has to go into relegation. Bremen scored the goals through Romano Schmid (14th minute, penalty kick), Jens Stage (33rd), Marvin Ducksch (66th) and Keke Topp (86th). Heidenheim will play in the relegation game against the third team in the second division on May 22nd and 26th, whose opponent will be announced on Sunday.
The situation in the league remains tense as Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum are relegated. Bochum was able to win 2-0 in the last game against FC St. Pauli and thus still stay in the Bundesliga, while RB Leipzig missed out on international participation due to a 2-3 defeat against VfB Stuttgart. Mainz 05 finished in sixth place with a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen, with Paul Nebel and Jonathan Burkardt scoring for Mainz.
European places decided
SC Freiburg will play in the Europa League after the loss against Frankfurt. The other international places were distributed to FC Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen as well as Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund. Mainz 05 qualifies for the Conference League, while RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg unfortunately will not be represented internationally.
In summary, the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga shows an exciting and gripping season, the course of which was peppered with many unexpected twists and turns. Spectators can now look forward to the relegation games while the teams take a well-deserved summer break.
