Discover the Oceaneum: a sea adventure for the whole family!
The Oceaneum in Stralsund, opened in 2008, is not only a striking building in the harbor panorama thanks to its extravagant architecture made of ship's steel, but also a magnet for around eight million visitors who pass through its doors every year. As Yacht.de reports, the Meereseum was named “Europe's Museum of the Year” in 2010 and offers its guests a fascinating insight into the underwater world of the northern seas.
The Oceaneum invites visitors to take a journey into various themed worlds: The exhibitions present the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the open Atlantic. A highlight is the penguin pool on the roof, where visitors can observe the Humboldt penguins, which are threatened with extinction. The breeding of these penguins plays an important role in species conservation as it actively contributes to the preservation of the species.
Fascinating aquariums and exhibits
With over 50 seawater aquariums containing more than four million liters of seawater, the Oceaneum offers life-size models of blue whales and sperm whales, which impressively illustrate the dimensions of these animals. The songs of humpback whales and the clicks of sperm whales, which can be heard through loudspeakers in the room, create a special atmosphere. The largest tank in the Atlantic exhibition faithfully recreates a cargo ship from 1909 and is accompanied by numerous animal and plant exhibits that were prepared in-house.
Visitors should note the recommendation to visit the Meeresum after 4 p.m. to avoid long waiting times. The museum is open until 7 p.m. and offers the option to purchase tickets online. For those interested in art and culture, there is also the nearby Maritime Museum in Stralsund's old town.
