Stunning in Berlin: Hiker missing on Corsica for weeks!

Marc Lauriac, a 50-year-old Berliner, has been missing on the Greek island of Corsica since May 1, 2025. The experienced hiker had set out on the challenging GR20 (Grande Randonnée 20) hiking trail to hike alone. This route is known for its scenic beauty but also for its challenges

The last location of his cell phone was on May 1st at 8:45 a.m. near the Petra Piana mountain hut. Since then, every attempt to find him has been unsuccessful. The Lauriacs family is very concerned and has asked the public for help in the search. Search operations began on May 4 but were limited due to poor weather.

Search operations and family engagement

On May 16, the official search for the missing hiker was called off, adding to his family's desperation. In order to continue to finance the search, she organized a fundraising campaign on the “GoFundMe” platform with the aim of collecting 55,000 euros. By May 26th, 47,500 euros had already been raised.

The GR20 route stretches over around 180 kilometers, divided into 16 stages, and includes impressive elevation differences totaling around 12,500 meters. The hike begins in Calenzana in the northwest of the island and ends in Conca in the southeast. Experts recommend walking the trail between mid-June and the end of October, as weather-related risks and difficulties increase in the other months.

Hiking challenges and safety tips

The path crosses untouched nature and has alpine characteristics; It requires optimal preparation, sure-footedness and a head for heights. You should also have appropriate equipment. Accommodations such as bergeries or camping sites next to mountain huts offer hikers the opportunity to spend the night and get some food.

Marc Lauriac is described as an experienced hiker, but the challenges of the GR20 should not be underestimated. The route marking with red and white signs on rocks and trees is helpful, but hikers must be particularly careful in the more difficult sections.

Marc Lauriac's story is a powerful appeal to the hiking community and the public. While the search for him continues to be relentless, hope for a happy ending remains.
