The strange thing about the Bat Cave of Kuta Lombok is that there are actually three caves that claim the same name; Bangkang Cave.

The first is called Goa Bangkang Prabu, the second is Goa Puwun (or Mystical Neverland) and the third is Goa Sumur. You will find them all in the same area and no matter which one you choose, you will see thousands of bats.

The Lombok Bat Cave, which I recommend visiting, is located next to a construction site for a new resort on the main road. Visiting the main cave system (Mystical Nervland) costs 60,000 rupiah, while the Bangkang Cave I visited costs only 25,000 and includes a local guide.

From the main street in Kuta Lombok, it's just a short 10-minute scooter ride up the hillside to the Kuta Lombok Bat Cave. The easiest way to find it is to type “Goa Bangkang Prabu” into Google Maps. Follow the directions and look for a small wooden sign on the left.

Tip: The best way to get around Kuta Lombok is to rent a motorbike. Avoid haggling and get a fair deal and local price by booking online with Klook.

What to Expect at Kuta Lombok Bat Cave

As soon as you arrive, you'll be greeted by friendly local guides who will immediately be honest about the entrance fee. I was a bit cautious and asked if the entrance fee included a guide, which he told me.

The first cavern is a tall and wide system that leads into smaller, narrower tunnels. Unfortunately these are closed to the public. Here you will see thousands of bats resting on the roof.

Go under carefully as the bats use you for target practice. There are also beetles and cockroaches all over the cave floor, but what do you expect from a bat cave?

Near the entrance, your guide will lead you into a larger cave with a rickety bamboo staircase. Here you'll also see thousands of bats and, if you're lucky, some incredible beams of light.

What is the best time to visit?

Best time to see cave light rays: 4-5pm. Best time to see bats flying: 5:30 p.m. – Sunset

The best time to visit Kuta Lombok Bat Cave depends on what you want to see. In the location I mentioned, the spectacular rays of light usually occur later in the afternoon, around 4-5 p.m. In the mystical Nerland Cave, the best time to see rays of light is around midday.

At both caves you can watch the nighttime spectacle of thousands of bats leaving their caves to hunt. It's a pretty incredible sight as you watch the setting sunset sky temporarily turn black from the sheer number of flying creatures.
