Where is Crawford’s Lookout and how do I get here?

The often neglected Crawford's Lookout is a quick stop on the Palmerston Highway between Innisfail and the Millaa Millaa region of the Tablelands.

Although it's quite a drive from Cairns at around 111 kilometers (1.5 hours), I want to assure you that a trip to this part of the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics Region is 100% worth it!

I've pinned the exact location of the viewpoint below to make it easier for you to find it. You'll find that the viewpoint is right in front of the Tchupala Falls and Wallicher Falls hiking trails, as well as the very impressive Nandroya Falls, just a little further away.

The North Johnston Lookout Track

Hiking distance: 3.4 kilometers there and back
Duration: 45 minutes – 1 hour
Altitude: 155 meters in total, mostly on the way back
Difficulty: Easy

Unfortunately, from Crawford’s Lookout you can only get a glimpse of the towering gorges of the North Johnston River Horseshoe Bend. However, if you take the adjacent hiking trail you'll get to a much better viewpoint.

This is a short hike with some incline, mainly on the way back. However, I would say it is definitely worth it and you should be able to complete the short walk in under an hour.

There is also the option to take a detour to the bottom of the Johnston River. This one appears to be a bit steeper, but we were more than happy with the view from North Johnston Lookout.
