Fuerteventura is booming: British holidaymakers are overtaking the Germans!
Fuerteventura, one of Spain's popular holiday islands, is experiencing a notable increase in tourist arrivals in 2025. A total of 758,195 holidaymakers were registered on the island in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of almost 8% compared to the previous year. This represents an increase of 55,120 tourists, making Fuerteventura the leader among the Canary Islands in terms of visitor numbers. Derwesten reports thatThe island is particularly benefiting from British holidaymakers, whose numbers increased by 13.2% and accounted for 243,181 arrivals in the first quarter.
German travellers, on the other hand, are seeing a decline. The number of German tourists fell by 1.3%, meaning a decrease from 239,500 to 236,398. This trend could be a sign that traveler preferences are changing, with British holidaymakers increasingly at the forefront of visitor numbers. T-Online points out thatthe other Canary Islands such as Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife recorded only small increases in tourism.
Sustainability and tourism infrastructure
However, the continued increase in visitor numbers raises sustainability concerns. Fuerteventura's tourism infrastructure could reach its limits if the influx is not managed appropriately. These concerns are not unfounded, as the island is known not only for its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere, but also for its numerous water sports, particularly windsurfing and kitesurfing. Derwesten pointed out the challengesattention that goes hand in hand with growing tourism.
The costs incurred on vacation include, for example, the average prices for meals. In Fuerteventura these range between 8 and 12 euros per person, which makes the island seem comparably affordable. Despite the decline in German travel, Fuerteventura remains a diverse destination for sun worshipers, nature lovers and families, underlining the island's appeal and encouraging the desire for responsible tourism.
