Gran Canaria: Strict rules for holidaymakers – fines of up to 3,000 euros!

Gran Canaria introduced new and strict rules for tourists visiting the northwest coast of the island on May 15, 2025. These regulations aim to regulate the behavior of holidaymakers and protect the environment. Violations can result in significant fines of up to 3,000 euros, which may come as an unexpected surprise for many vacationers. The West reports that the changes apply primarily to the coastal region of Agaete.

The new regulations include comprehensive bans to curb noise and environmental pollution. For example, all types of smoking bans, including e-cigarettes, are in effect on the region's beaches. Playing music over speakers is also prohibited. These measures aim to improve the stay for all guests and local residents.

Prohibited activities and fines

The list of prohibited activities is impressive and includes both everyday actions and specific rules for visiting the beach. The prohibitions include:

  • Sexuelle Aktivitäten im Wasser und in Badegebieten
  • Rauchen
  • Abspielen von Musik auf Sonnenliegen
  • Kochen und Grillen, inklusive auf Strandpromenaden
  • Nutzung von Sonnenschirmen, die nicht standsicher sind
  • Reservieren von Liegen mit Handtüchern
  • Campen und Zelten an Stränden
  • Das Sammeln von Muscheln
  • Unsachgemäße Nutzung öffentlicher Duschen und Fußwaschstationen

Violations are subject to fines, which vary depending on the severity of the offense. Minor violations can be punished with up to 750 euros, while serious violations can cost 1,500 euros. Very serious violations can even lead to fines of up to 3,000 euros.

Permitted activities and handling of pets

Despite the strict regulations, there are also permitted activities that should make your stay on the beaches more pleasant. For example, skinny dipping is allowed except on the beaches of El Risco, Las Nieves and Las Salinas. Pets are also allowed, but must be kept on a leash. Still, dogs are prohibited from swimming in certain areas, including Las Nieves and El Risco beaches.

These new regulations were introduced to restore the balance between mass tourism and the everyday life of the local population. The background is increasing complaints from the local population about the negative effects of tourism. Check24 also reports on other measures such as an environmental tax for guests and strict guidelines for holiday apartments.
