Climate-friendly tourism: lecture and discussion in South Tyrol!
On May 22, 2025, Eurac Research will host a lecture evening on “Climate-friendly tourism and its challenges” at 5:00 p.m. Speaker Helga Weisz, Professor of Industrial Ecology and Climate Change at the Humboldt University in Berlin, will shed light on central issues of sustainability in tourism. She works closely with the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry at the German Climate Fund for Tourism to show practical paths towards more sustainable tourism. South Tyrol News reports that the lecture will also identify counterproductive solutions to the climate crisis.
Following the lecture, there will be a panel discussion with local players from the tourism industry. The aim of this discussion is to discuss useful lessons, approaches and challenges in the context of South Tyrol. The event is aimed at a broad audience consisting of representatives from politics, business, science and society.
Sustainability in tourism
Tourism is often viewed as an area that has both positive and negative impacts on the environment and society. The dimensions of sustainability in tourism include environmental, social and economic, although other aspects such as management are also partially taken into account. The issue paper of the Federal Environment Agency describes various models and concepts that are used to measure and evaluate sustainability in tourism.
In addition, relevant control instruments that can be implemented in the area of sustainability are presented. These approaches are crucial to addressing the environmental challenges that tourism poses. The event and the discussions will be about integrating these concepts and developing concrete action steps.
