Long Night of Sciences: Discover Leipzig's secrets!
On Friday, June 20, 2025, the city of Leipzig is expecting a very special event: the 9th Long Night of Science will captivate those interested in science. From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., a varied program is offered at 55 locations and includes over 140 facilities. Admission is free and registration is not required, making the event particularly accessible to everyone.
Mayor Burkhard Jung emphasizes the diversity and performance of Leipzig as a science location. “The Long Night of Science is a highlight in the city’s calendar,” he says. This year, special attention is paid to the first-ever awarding of the Leipzig Science Prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros. This prize is awarded in collaboration with the city of Leipzig, the University of Leipzig and the Saxon Academy of Sciences.
An exciting program for all age groups
Almost 500 events are already available online, with the offerings growing every day. Children and young people can look forward to special events from 4 p.m. A highlight for young scientists is the “Leipzig MALT” competition for children aged 3 to 14, which runs until May 31st. The best submissions will be presented in an exhibition on the university's Augustusplatz campus.
The Saxon Academy of Sciences is also a prominent venue. Here, visitors can expect an interesting program that offers, among other things, insights into the world of artificial intelligence, including a telephone conversation with Clara Schumann using an AI-supported system. There will also be a VR experience to discover Buddhist paintings on the Silk Road, handwriting recognition workshops and much more.
Mobility and accessibility
Various mobility offers are available for visitors. Participants can use Nextbike free of charge to commute between the individual locations. In addition, a special bus route run by the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) runs between Augustusplatz and the Science Park between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in order to improve accessibility to the events. The hosts are an association of Leipzig universities, research institutions and the city of Leipzig, supported by the Leipzig Group, Sparkasse Leipzig, the Leipzig Science Network and the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer.
