After 4 months of traveling around the incredible island of Tasmania, I finally got around to seeing the famous Edge of the World viewpoint at Gardiner’s Point. I was told about this epic place almost immediately after I arrived and was thrilled to finally be able to try it out.

In this short travel guide, I'll summarize everything you need to know about visiting the Edge of the World in Tasmania. I will also include a short section about my experiences and some photos from my trip that I hope will inspire you to visit.

About the end of the world in Tasmania

The Edge of the World is a fitting name for the rugged region in Tasmania's desolate northwest. Nothing but a small plaque separates you from the vastness of the Indian Ocean.

Looking directly west, the line of sight would continue well beyond the horizon. Although this point is not the westernmost of Tasmania, it is a point where, if our visibility had no physical limits, we would eventually see landfall on the east coast of Argentina around the globe! In fact, this expanse of ocean is the most extensive stretch of ocean in the world.

This overlook is located at Gardiners Point, near West Point State Reserve, next to the mouth of the Arthur River. Most people tend to visit the Edge of the World on a self-drive trip along Tarkine Drive.

Edge Of The World Tours

Unfortunately, because the edge of the world viewpoint is so remote, there is no dedicated tour that runs here from a major city in Tasmania. However, if you have 5 days to spare in Hobart and are looking for a way to explore the edge of the world as well as many other unmissable Tasmanian highlights, then I would recommend this epic 5-day all-inclusive tour of Tasmania.

Otherwise, below I've listed some of the top-rated tours and experiences from the Wild West Coast that you should definitely consider.

How to get here independently

As I mentioned earlier, you will need your own vehicle to get to the Edge of the World viewpoint in Tasmania. Remember that you should head to Gardiners Point, which is located at the end of Airey Street and is accessible from Temma Road. Expect to drive around 1.5 hours from Stanley or 3.5 hours from Launceston.

The streets are all paved until you get to Airey Street towards the beach. However, this road is very well maintained and any type of vehicle should tolerate good weather.

Below I have pinned the exact location of the viewpoint so that you can get here independently.

My experience at the edge of the world

Whatever you've heard about the weather in Tasmania, let me tell you it's definitely true. I believe the old sayings are even truer on the West Coast. It's wet, wild, cold and extremely unpredictable.

After a long day exploring Tasmania's incredible Tarkine, we've arrived at the edge of the world. The Roaring Forties were relentless, causing our big van to sway nervously as we drove up the West Coast. We arrived at the lookout to take some photos, but unfortunately the weather was just too bad to even risk getting my camera out.

Due to the bad weather, we rather obnoxiously decided on a “stealth camp”, next to a large “No Camping” sign. Normally we always respect the no camping rules, but the weather came in and we felt it was too dangerous to continue. Besides, we thought that no one would be stupid enough to drive here in this weather anyway!

Luckily, our suspicions turned out to be true. We endured a long night of howling winds and woke up to a narrow gap in sunrise weather that allowed us to take a few photos and properly explore the end of the world.
