Guide to visit the edge of the world in Tasmania
Everything you need to know about visiting the highly praised "Edge of the World" to Tasmania's wild northwest coast. Contains how you come here, what awaits you, and photos from the edge.
After I had traveled around the incredible island of Tasmania for 4 months, I finally came to see the famous “Edge of the World” viewpoint at Gardiner’s Point. I was told about this epic place almost immediately after my arrival, and I was thrilled to finally be able to try it out.
In this short travel guide, I will summarize everything you need to know about a visit to the edge of the world in Tasmania. I will also add a short section of my experiences and some photos of my trip, from which I hope you will inspire you to visit
On the end of the world in Tasmania
The Edge of the World is a suitable name for the rugged region in the bleak northwest of Tasmania. She separates nothing but a small panel from the vastness of the Indian Ocean.
If you look directly to the west, the line of sight would continue far beyond the horizon. Although this point is not the westernmost of Tasmania, it is a point where, if our view had no physical limits, we would finally see a landing on the east coast of Argentina around the world! In fact, this area of the sea is the most extensive ocean section of the world.
This viewpoint is located at the Gardiner Point, near the West Point State Reserve, next to the mouth of Arthur River. Most people tend to visit the edge of the world on a self -driven trip along the Tarkine Drive.

Edge of the World tours
Since the viewpoint on the edge of the world is so remote, there is unfortunately no special tour that leads here from a larger city in Tasmania. However, if you have 5 days in Hobart and look for a way to explore the edge of the world and many other inevitable Tasmanian highlights, I would recommend this epic 5-day all-inclusive tour through Tasmania.
Otherwise I have listed some of the top rated tours and experiences from the wild west coast, which you should definitely consider.
How to come here independently
As I mentioned, you need your own vehicle to get to the “Edge of the World” viewpoint in Tasmania. Remember that you should go to Gardiner's point that is at the end of the Airey Street and can be reached via the Temma Road. Expect a 1.5-hour drive from Stanley or 3.5 hours from Launceston.
The streets are all paved until they reach the Airey Street towards the beach. However, this road is very well maintained and every vehicle type should be tolerated in good weather.
Below I attached the exact position of the viewpoint so that you can get here independently.

My experience on the edge of the world
Whatever you heard about the weather in Tasmania, let me tell you that it is definitely true. I believe that the old sayings on the west coast are even more true. It's wet, wild, cold and extremely unpredictable.
After a long day when we explored incredible tarkine, we arrived on the edge of the world. The wild Roaring Fouries were relentless and let our big van fluctuate nervously when we drove up the west coast. We arrived at the viewpoint to take a few photos, but unfortunately the weather was just too bad to even take the risk of getting my camera out.
Because of the bad weather, we decided quite obviously for a "stealth camp", alongside a large "No Camping" sign. Usually we always respect the no-camping rules, but the weather came in and we thought it was too dangerous. We also thought that nobody was so stupid anyway to drive here in the weather!
Fortunately, our assumptions have come true. We survived a long night with howling winds and woke up with a narrow sunrise weather gap, which made it possible for us to take a few photos and to explore the end of the world correctly.
