New Nature Friends House in Mecklenburg: A symbol of diversity and sustainability!
The NaturFreunde Rostock are committed to building a new Nature Friends House in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This initiative aims to create an intergenerational place for exchange, encounters and events, especially in a rural area where the need for such community offerings is growing. The planned location is in Mistorf, about 30 kilometers south of Rostock, where there is currently no Nature Friends House, although there are around 400 throughout Germany. Loud NatureFriends The “Haus Uhlenfuge” near Rostock used to have this function, but was demolished after it was expropriated by the National Socialists.
The new Nature Friends House will be housed in a former stable with an area of 75 square meters. The planned rooms include a kitchen, sanitary facilities and a multifunctional room on the ground floor. In the attic there are additional overnight accommodations for up to ten people as well as an additional multifunctional room. Covered seating and a barbecue area are planned for the outdoor area. The surrounding area offers attractive nature with swimming lakes, forests and a network of cycle paths, and the Baltic Sea can also be reached in 40 minutes by S-Bahn.
A sign of an open society
With the project, the local group not only wants to create a cultural space, but also set an example for nature and environmental protection, democratic socialism and an open society. Against the background of an increase in right-wing extremist crimes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as a report on the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen from 1992 shows, the Nature Friends see their project as an important task. These riots are considered one of the most massive racially motivated events in Germany after the Second World War, when xenophobic attacks took place against the central reception center for asylum seekers and a dormitory for Vietnamese contract workers. Loud Wikipedia Hundreds of rioters had to destroy and set the dormitory on fire for several days, while police and firefighters were hampered.
NaturFreunde Rostock sees itself as having a responsibility to strengthen democratic civil society in Mecklenburg. They are currently developing a financing concept for the new Nature Friends House and are asking for donations to realize the project. No regular overnight accommodation and catering will be offered in order not to compete with existing offers in the village. Instead, the house should be a space for sustainable dialogue and joint activities without pursuing commercial interests.
The project reflects the desire of many in the region to face history and take an active stand against racism and xenophobia. NatureFriends are not only committed to the environment, but also to a culture of togetherness and openness at a time when such values are more in demand than ever.
