About the Montezuma Falls in Tasmania

Height of the Montezuma cases: 104 meters

Montezuma Falls is a multi-stage waterfall that can be found at the end of a simple 1.5-hour forest hike along a historic former tram. The area is managed by "Sustainable Timber Tasmania" (formerly forestry Tasmania), but is accessible to the public.

Unfortunately, the rivers and streams are contaminated with heavy metals due to the long mining history in the region around Rosery and cannot be drinked. I found this a particularly tragic reality when you consider how wild and biodiversity this region is.

Where are the Montezuma cases?

The waterfall path can be reached via Williamsford, which is about two kilometers south of Rosery in western Tasmania. The starting point of the hiking trail is about 63 kilometers from Strahan or 35 kilometers from Tullah. This area is mainly a mining region, so the cities are quite small and remote.

You will probably also lose the reception on the way to the Montezuma Falls after you have passed Rasury. Therefore, I suggest saving this blog or loading the map route below.

How do I get here?

The easiest way to navigate to the Montezuma Falls in Tasmania is to enter the GPS coordinates or Google Maps PIN above. However, if you prefer guided directions, I am also there for you.

No matter whether you come from the west coast or from Tullah, first drive on the Murchison Highway (A10) to the west side of Raseber. Briefly drive outside of Rosery towards Williamsford Road and drive this steep, winding road up a few kilometers. There are signs along the way that display the direction to the Montezuma Falls. But basically you should stay on the Williamsford Road until you see a sign that holds right near Scotts Creek.

Here you will find a large, cleared parking lot next to the starting point of the hiking trail with good signage and space for more than 25 cars.

The Williamsford Road is not paved for a large part of the trip. However, the road is in good condition and leads past private houses so that in good weather you don't have to worry, even if you have a big van or motorhome.

TIP: There is a small petrol station in Rasebery where you should refuel, as you will not find any more in front of Strahan or Queenstown.

Guided tour option

Montezuma is a fairly popular waterfall in Tasmania, but quite remote. As a result, you will not find many guided tours that visit this far -reaching corner of Tasmania. However, if you are in Hobart, there is a very highly rated 5-day tour that includes a visit to Montezuma and many of the other important highlights in Tasmania.

TIP: If you do not yet have your own vehicle in Tassie, be sure to compare the prices on Rentalcars.com and Carnextdoor to get much better offers than with direct bookings.

Otherwise, if you visit Tasmania's wild west without a car, you will see the following handpicked activities in the region that you absolutely have to do.

Hike to the Montezuma cases

Hiking route and back
Duration and back
Height: 120 meters of total height difference (gradually and largely flat)
difficulty: Simple

The hike to the Montezuma cases begins at the starting point mentioned above. It is mostly flat, with a wide track that follows the old North East Dundas Tramway. There are signs all over the way and it is very easy to follow.

Although this waterfall hike is a little long with 11 kilometers back and forth, I have classified it as simply because it is really a walk in the park. There were a few great older women who met on the way that I would say in the 70s and they didn't seem to have a problem with the hike to the Montezuma cases.

On the way you cross a few old wooden bridges and pass narrow -carved passages through the mountains. While they are constantly reminded of the mining, nature is quite breathtaking. Beautiful rainforest consisting of large leather forests, myrtle, huge tree ferns and sass aafras dominates both sides of the route.

On my strava you will find a detailed representation of the trail.

About the famous Montezuma Falls.

About 5 kilometers along the Montezuma Falls Walk come across the famous suspension bridge. This bridge is one of the most impressive I saw in Tasmania and offers some great photo opportunities right next to the waterfall.

Unfortunately, the suspension bridge of Montezuma has recently suffered some damage caused by floods and fallen trees. As a result, the bridge is closed. I am not sure whether there are any immediate plans of "Sustainable Timber Tasmania" to renovate the bridge.

Update November 2021: The bridge has now been repaired and is open again!

Don't worry, you don't have to cross the bridge to reach the 104 meter high Montezuma case. We stopped at the bridge, took a few photos and continued to the foot of the multi -storey forest giant.

Arrival at the foot of the Montezuma Falls

only go up a few hundred meters from the suspension bridge and you are at the foot of the Montezuma Falls, Tasmania's highest permanent waterfall.

The view from below is great, with a lot of space, to turn off your backpack and take a few photos. If you look up, the Montezuma cases pour down the steep cliff in several graded steps and end on some large boulders.

Depending on the season, this waterfall can range from a gentle watering to a mighty waterfall, which you can hardly come close.

When we visited Montezuma cases in winter, we were lucky enough to find them somewhere in between. However, while we were waiting for it to be clear, the fog was so dense that we could not see the tip of the waterfall. Anyway, we were really happy because it created a nice, atmospheric scene.

Mountain building tunnel

keep an eye out for less than one kilometer on the way back (or on the way to the waterfall) for the entrance to an old mining tunnel. It is possible to go to this claustrophobic tunnel abandon, which ends about 10 meters away at a barrier.

More: The Montezuma Falls 4WD Track

In this waterfall leader I concentrated on the hike to the Montezuma Falls. However, there is also a 4WD route that offers an alternative route to reach the waterfall.

You say that this special 4WD route is quite difficult to manage and that if it has rained, it shouldn't even be thought about it. Unfortunately, I had no opportunity to read this section, but if you are interested in my friends of The Caravan of Courage, have taken a VLOG when you tackled an electric motorcycle. I embedded it below!

Accommodation in the west of Tasmania

The most popular accommodation in West Tasmania is Strahan. There is so much to see and do in this region, and it is definitely worth spending at least a few days. Activities such as the Gordon River Cruise and the cog railway are a must if they travel to Tasmania.

Below are a few of my recommended accommodations in nearby Strahan and one in Queenstown.
