Estates in Schleswig-Holstein: From farm to chic hotel!

The estates in Schleswig-Holstein have developed into indispensable cultural and tourist attractions over the centuries. Once agricultural centers, many of these properties are now popular travel destinations, attracting visitors from near and far with their charming ambience. Schleswig-Holstein is known for its estates, which often rely on tourism to make ends meet. This change is reflected in the diverse offerings, ranging from overnight accommodations to cultural events.

Gut Panker in the Plön district in particular has made a name for itself. The property not only includes a hotel-restaurant called “Ole Liese”, which offers 23 rooms for overnight guests, but also an entire village with a chapel, houses and shops. Administrator Achaz von Wintzingerode emphasizes the importance of property and good employees for the successful management of such properties. Gut Panker attracts numerous tourists from Hamburg who particularly enjoy the cultural and culinary offerings.

Cultural events and overnight accommodations

The Schleswig-Holstein Tourism Agency emphasizes the role of estates as event locations. Christmas markets on these properties have now become major visitor magnets. Another example is the Immenhof in Malente, which opened in 2021 after extensive restoration as a hotel with 50 rooms and two restaurants. Guests primarily arrive from Hamburg, Berlin, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The restaurants place particular emphasis on regional and seasonal products and offer their visitors an authentic culinary experience.

Another highlight is the Hotel Gut Immenhof, which was converted from the former Gut Rothensande and offers a fantastic view of the Kellersee and the surrounding landscape. Gut Nehmten on the Großer Plöner See has also developed further in recent years, offers three holiday apartments in addition to agriculture and forestry and generates around ten percent of its income from tourism. These developments clearly show how closely the agricultural sector is linked to the modern tourism industry.

Architecture and history of the estates

The cultural landscape of Schleswig-Holstein is not only characterized by its use as a tourist destination, but also by its unique architecture. The region is home to a large number of gardens, parks, avenues and lakes, which are documented in a comprehensive overview. Two volumes were published that introduce the estates and manor houses in Schleswig-Holstein. These volumes provide an overview of the development of the estate landscape up to the Middle Ages and contain information on historical developments as well as site plans and floor plans of important estates.

The depictions include preserved mansions as well as information on disappeared estates and, with around 1,000 color illustrations, offer a fascinating insight into the architectural diversity of this region. The interest in the estates and their history and architecture remains unbroken, which is also reflected in the increasing number of tourists who want to discover the unique flair of Schleswig-Holstein.

The combination of cultural offerings, historical architecture and natural location makes Schleswig-Holstein's estates an impressive experience for visitors and attracts numerous guests every year. t-online.de and froelichundkaufmann.de report on the diversity and charm of this manorial cultural landscape.
