Tourism in Schleswig-Holstein: Decline causes worry lines!

The tourism season in Schleswig-Holstein started with a slight decline in 2024 after a record year. In the first quarter of 2024, the region recorded a 7.3% decline in arrivals to hotels and guesthouses to just under 1.286 million guests compared to the previous year. The number of overnight stays booked even fell by 11.1% to over 4.4 million. This was reported by the Time.

Bettina Bunge, managing director of the tourism agency, noted that there is a reluctance to book short vacations as well as second and third vacations. There is also a trend towards short-term bookings, which makes planning more difficult for landlords and leisure providers. In March 2024 there was a particularly sharp decline in overnight stays of 19.8%.

Reasons for the decline

One reason for this development is the late Easter at the beginning of April, and there were also no school holidays in Germany in March. Tourism Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) emphasized the importance of tourism value creation for the country's economic performance and chose clear words about the current situation.

In 2024, a total of 9.4 million guest arrivals and over 38 million overnight stays, including camping, were counted. This placed Schleswig-Holstein in fifth place among the federal states in terms of guest arrivals, behind Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

Amount of tourism

Tourism in Schleswig-Holstein accounts for almost 230 million days of stay every year. Day guests account for over 140 million of these days. Within overnight tourism, more than 31.7 million overnight stays were recorded in commercial establishments (excluding camping), according to this TVSH.

Other components of the overall tourism market include visits to relatives and friends, tourist and long-term camping, motorhomes, private landlords, leisure residences and sharing offers. In total, this results in around 87.7 million overnight stays in the overall tourism market.

To improve transparency in tourism data, a model project of the Sparkasse Tourism Barometer Schleswig-Holstein was started. In collaboration with 10 model municipalities, which represent around 40% of total demand, a monthly evaluation of the data from the registration form statistics has been carried out since 2019. This data is combined with information about holiday periods, weather trends and economic factors.
