NINERS Chemnitz and Heidelberg: On to the playoff duel for the semi-finals!
The MLP Academics Heidelberg and the NINERS Chemnitz are at the beginning of their quarter-final series in the playoffs of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga. After an exciting main round in which the teams finished with the same number of points with a record of 18 wins and 14 defeats, the first game will be played on Saturday, May 17th at 5 p.m. in the Chemnitz Trade Fair. This is a historic moment for the MLP Academics, who have moved into the BBL playoffs for the first time since their promotion in 2021. After four years of effort and development, the anticipation for this series is high. Alex Vogel, the athletic director of the MLP Academics, describes his team as underdogs and emphasizes the great fighting spirit they will bring with them.
The NINERS Chemnitz finished the main round in fourth place and thus have the home advantage in the best-of-five series. Both teams can look back on an exciting history, having met each other a total of 45 times in competitive games since 1999, with the Chemnitz team having the upper hand with a record of 25:20. In the current season, however, Heidelberg was able to win two of three meetings against Chemnitz, which brings additional explosiveness to the upcoming games.
The statistics speak for themselves
The NINERS Chemnitz go into the series with an outstanding offensive. Victor Bailey Jr. leads the team as a top scorer with an average of 15.1 points per game. However, statistical comparisons show that Heidelberg is ahead defensively. The two teams have little difference in terms of field shooting percentage, free throw percentage, rebounds, assists, turnovers and fouls. This gives hope for an exciting duel at eye level.
In the main round, the Chemnitz team showed strong form, winning three of their last four games, but suffered a defeat against Oldenburg (94:104) on the last match day. Heidelberg, on the other hand, had a run in the cup and also reached the quarter-finals. It remains to be seen to what extent the changes in the Chemnitz squad, including new additions Damien Jefferson, Kevin Yebo and Jacob Gilyard, will influence the dynamics of the series.
