Autumn holidays start: ADAC warns of traffic jams and airport chaos in NRW!

With the impending opening of the autumn holidays on Sunday, October 12th, travel preparations in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are in full swing. The ADAC is already warning of a busy traffic situation and numerous traffic jams on the region's motorways. One of the increased travel waves is expected due to a rush of passengers at Düsseldorf Airport, where over 86,000 passengers are expected that day, making it the busiest day of the year for passengers, reports the Time.

Heavy traffic is forecast, particularly on Friday afternoons, between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. While the weekend could be a little quieter, it should be noted that delays are to be expected on routes to the North and Baltic Sea coasts as well as to the south, for example to Munich. The ADAC analysis shows that the A1, A2, A3, A4 and A40 motorways are particularly at risk of traffic jams, especially around the Cologne/Bonn metropolitan areas and in the Ruhr area.

Traffic and travel information

An additional factor that travelers need to take into account are longer waiting times at the checkpoints at Düsseldorf Airport, as additional requirements from the Federal Police are being implemented. The railway is also carrying out construction work between Dortmund and Essen, which will minimize commuter traffic and reroute long-distance trains. Travelers to Bochum also don't have to expect any long-distance transport stops. Recommendations for travel flexibility, particularly regarding travel times to airports and popular destinations, are also provided.

Construction work and traffic disruptions

WDR refers to a large number of construction sites and traffic problems in the coming weeks. This includes, among other things, the A59 in Düsseldorf, which will be closed for eight months from Wednesday, October 15th due to road renovation. The A40 in Duisburg will also be completely closed from Friday, October 17th to Monday, October 20th due to a bridge being demolished. The A44 near Düsseldorf will be subject to lane renewal from October 21st to 28th.

The A46 in Sauerland will also be subject to night-time closures until December 11th, while the A40 before the Dutch border will be subject to construction work between October 15th and 16th. While heavy traffic jams of up to 500 kilometers have been recorded in recent weeks, there will be a positive aspect during the autumn holidays: fewer commuters will be on the road. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about roadworks and delays on their routes to reduce stress while traveling.
