Maria from North Rhine-Westphalia is fulfilling her dream of a day at the sea in the Netherlands with the wish car - despite health challenges.

On June 21, 2025, the Wish Car, a project of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), fulfilled a very special wish: Maria from North Rhine-Westphalia was allowed to visit the place she longed for in the Netherlands and spend a day by the sea. This initiative aims to provide seriously ill people with unforgettable experiences. Maria's journey was characterized, among other things, by her medical needs, as she is permanently dependent on oxygen. This makes any trip complicated, especially because your portable oxygen concentrator only has a short-lived battery.
The Wish Car team ensured that all necessary arrangements were made to make the trip an unforgettable experience. An important measure was the installation of a 230 V socket in the vehicle, which made it possible to charge the oxygen concentrator while driving. Maria was accompanied on her journey by a nurse and was welcomed at her destination by her daughter and her partner.
An unforgettable day by the sea
The tour group initially had to contend with unsettled weather, which affected their plans for the day. Instead of going straight to the sea, they decided to visit the fish restaurant “de Kaap” to fortify themselves with a delicious meal. Thanks to an extension cable, Maria was able to concentrate on the experience without having to worry about the battery of her oxygen device.
After refreshment, the weather improved and the group set off for the sea. Maria almost reached the waterline in her wheelchair and enjoyed the breathtaking view over the Zuiderzee. “It was a fulfilling day full of shared experiences,” reports the wish car on Facebook about this special trip. The day ended for Maria and her companions with a cup of coffee in a restaurant with a sea view. Maria's partner, who lives with her in an institution, was also there on the journey home.
Donations that help
The Wish Cart relies on donations to make such heartfelt wishes come true. In order to make things easier for donors, it is no longer necessary to obtain donation receipts up to an amount of 300.00 euros per year for tax returns. A booking confirmation from the bank, such as account statements or direct debit receipts, is sufficient as proof for the tax office in accordance with Section 50 Paragraph 2 No. 2 Letter b EStDV.
It is important that this confirmation contains the following information:

- Angaben zur Steuerbegünstigung des ASB
