Travel medical ambulance: ensure health for your next vacation!

The Federico II University Hospital in Naples has set up a travel medical clinic to offer travelers comprehensive health advice. This initiative is particularly important for people planning exotic trips or returning from a trip with symptoms of illness. Professor Ivan Gentile, UOC Director of Infectious Diseases, highlights the importance of health preparation before traveling.

The outpatient clinic is open every Wednesday afternoon. Travelers can book appointments via the CUP, the Campania app in Salute or regional pharmacies. A referral for the “initial infectious disease examination” is required. The specialists in the outpatient clinic provide a personalized infection risk assessment based on the specific destination, travel duration and individual health conditions.

Vaccination recommendations and prophylaxis

The clinic offers not only individual advice, but also recommendations on vaccinations and prophylaxis necessary to travel safely in areas with widespread infectious diseases. The travel medical clinic also supports travelers who have symptoms or suspect an infection after their return.

Particular attention is paid to pregnant women, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals who require specific prevention programs. This approach underlines the university clinic's commitment to care, research and innovation in the field of travel medicine.

Travel vaccinations in Germany

In Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) issues vaccination recommendations. These recommendations are important, especially as travelers are at increased risk of exposure. In addition, travel vaccinations offer individual protection against certain infectious diseases and are also in the public interest to avoid the spread of infectious pathogens.

Since 2021, STIKO has been publishing specific recommendations on travel vaccinations in collaboration with the German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health (DTG). These include general aspects of travel medical advice, as well as information for special risk groups and an overview of recommended vaccinations. Country-specific travel vaccinations are presented in country tables, which provide information on documentation requirements and recommended vaccinations for specific countries.

The information on these recommendations was last updated on July 23, 2025. Travelers are advised to obtain comprehensive information and, if necessary, seek travel medical advice to ensure their safety while traveling.
