Romanesque Prize 2023: Families and projects honored for our heritage!

The Romanesque Prize 2023 was ceremoniously awarded today and honors outstanding initiatives to preserve the cultural heritage in Saxony-Anhalt. This year the award goes to the Löderbusch family, who are actively involved in the monastery church in Groß Ammensleben. Michael Löderbusch, a passionate organist and choir director, and his wife Elisabeth play a central role in ensuring the church remains open by offering tours and supporting restoration projects. In addition, the project “Romanesque – the secret of the crypt” in Merseburg Cathedral was honored. This innovative project uses modern formats and public relations to interactively introduce students to Romanesque architecture. Special awards and prizes

The Romanesque Prize is not only associated with a gold medal donated by the FDP, but also with a special prize of 10,000 euros. This was awarded to the Magdeburg Monastery of Our Lady Art Museum and honors the many years of work on the preservation and cultural use of the Romanesque building. Current preservation measures include the renovation of the monastery church and the expansion of the north gallery.

The monastery has been part of the “Romanesque Road” tourist route since 1995, which connects over 88 Romanesque buildings in 73 locations. This route is considered a major attraction in Germany and attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. This year's theme is also aimed at “20 years of garden dreams in Saxony-Anhalt”. Additional award winners

The Romanesque Prize is being awarded for the 25th time this year. The Förderverein Klosterbauhütte Merseburg e.V. receives the gold medal for proud achievements in raising awareness of the “Romanesque Road” and in particular for its commitment to the St. Peter's Monastery in Merseburg, one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in the city. The project also made it possible to use the monastery as an event location and thus preserve the building structure.

A total of three silver medals were also awarded. Reinhard Schmitt was honored for his voluntary research work on architectural and art historical topics, the Fotoclub Magdeburg 07 e.V. for professional photos to support public relations work and the Verein lebens Mittelalter Ballenstedt e.V. for communicating historical customs.

The award ceremony took place on September 5, 2020 in the St. Mary's Church of Naumburg Cathedral. The Romanesque Prize remains an important symbol of the commitment of many people who are committed to preserving and caring for the cultural treasures of Saxony-Anhalt.
